HU spikers top Spring Arbor in 4

The Huntington University volleyball team dispatched visiting Spring Arbor University, 3-1, on Saturday, Oct. 22.

The Foresters took the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-19, before getting edged in the third frame, 23-25. Coach Kyle Shondell’s squad bounced back, though, with a 25-17 victory in the fourth set to take the match.

Huntington, 13-15, 7-8 in Crossroads League play, got 11 kills from sophomore Tailor Schultheis. Junior Danielle Gurwell and freshman Callie Collins also got in on the scoring, tallying nine kills apiece.

Muncie Central sweeps Lady Vike spikers out of sectional

The season came to an end for the Huntington North High School volleyball team with a sweep at the hands of Muncie Central in the semifinals of the Lady Bearcats’ own sectional on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Falling to Muncie Central for the second postseason in a row, Huntington North took losses of 14-25, 14-25, 23-25 to finish the season 24-11.

Seniors Mackenzi Cannici and Allyson Mettler produced seven kills apiece to pace the Lady Viking offense. Senior Kylie Kaylor backed up their efforts with 16 assists.

Vikings miss state cross country spot by one at semi-state

The Huntington North High School boys’ cross country team finished one place shy of advancing to the state finals at the New Haven Semi-state, held Saturday, Oct. 22, at the IPFW Cross Country Course, in Fort Wayne.

Needing to post a top-six finish to move on, the Vikings placed seventh in the 20-team field with a tally of 199.

Lady Vike harriers 11th at semi-state

The season drew to a close for the Huntington North High School girls’ cross country team with an 11th-place showing at the New Haven Semi-state, held Saturday, Oct. 22, at the IPFW Cross Country Course, in Fort Wayne.

The Lady Vikings were led by Chloe Scheiber, who earned a trip to the state finals by finishing among the race’s top 10 individuals from non-advancing squads. Scheiber, a junior, clocked in at 19:02.39, good for 14th place among team runners.

Lady Vike spikers bounce Homestead in first round of sectional

After a loss in the opening set, the Huntington North High School volleyball team bounced back with three straight wins to defeat Homestead in the first round of the Muncie Central Sectional on Thursday, Oct. 20.

The Lady Vikings, 24-10, move on to face the host Lady Bearcats, 22-10, in the sectional semifinals on Saturday, Oct. 22, following the day’s first match at 11 a.m. With a victory in that contest, Coach Trinda Goings’ would advance to the championship match at 7 p.m.

HU women booters play to 2OT tie

The Huntington University women’s soccer team and host Marian University played to a 1-1, double-overtime stalemate on Wednesday, Oct. 19.

Logan Bowling gave the Knights a 1-0 lead in the opening half, but the Foresters’ Tessy Geiss knotted things up with a tally in the second. Huntington keeper Paige Coolman logged three saves across both overtime periods to keep Marian off the board, but her Knight counterpart, Jurnee Reveles, made two stops to keep the Foresters off, too.

Canned good admission for HU hoop opener Oct. 22

The Huntington University men’s basketball team kicks off its season on Saturday, Oct. 22, with a scrimmage against Indiana Tech. Tip-off is slated for 11 a.m. at Platt Arena.

In lieu of charging admission to the scrimmage, the Foresters are asking fans to bring a canned good for the UCAN Crush Hunger campaign.

HU’s first official game is Friday, Nov. 4, against Marygrove College at 7 p.m. as part of the Huntington University Classic.

Local YMCA now taking Kim League hoop registration

The Parkview Huntington Family YMCA is now accepting registrations for the 2016-17 session of Kim League basketball.

The league offers divisions for youth in preschool through eighth grade.

The registration deadline for preschool through fourth grade divisions is Nov. 7. Games will begin on Dec. 3.

Fifth grade youth games will begin on Nov. 12. Rgistration is over.

Those in sixth through eighth grades can register through Dec. 24, and practices will begin on Jan. 9.

Runners, walkers, riders can join Spook-A-Thon

The choice is to ride, run or walk at the third annual Spook-A-Thon sponsored by Warren Health and Fitness Center on Saturday morning, Oct. 29.

Bicycle riders take off first at 8:15 a.m. on a 20-mile jaunt around the Warren area, while runners and walkers head out at 8:30 on a 3.1-mile route. A one-mile children’s boo run wraps things up at 9:30 a.m.

Starting point for all events is at the fitness center, 1111 Huntington Ave., Warren.

Registration for the bike ride and the 5K is at 8 a.m. Boo run registration is at 9 a.m.

MVNU sweeps HU spikers

The Huntington University volleyball team was swept by visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene University, 3-0, on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Scores were 17-24, 24-26, 19-25.

The Foresters' sixth straight loss moved them to 11-15 overall and 5-8 in the Crossroads League.

Freshman outside hitter Paige Eakright led the Foresters with nine kills. Josie Beavers and Audrey Mallers chipped in five kills.

Breanna Levings and Emily Hubby each had 12 assists to help facilitate the offense, and Kate Cobb again rallied the defense with 13 digs.

Vike's May ends season at regional

The season came to a close for Huntington North High School tennis player Nick May in the championship match of the Kokomo Regional on Saturday, Oct. 15.

May, a senior, fell to Marion’s Riley Worland, 1-6, 1-6, to see his run in the state singles tournament come to an end.

Finishing with a postseason record of 3-1, May played his way into the title match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Vladik Cegarra, of Crawfordsville, earlier in the day.

Warpup Farms defeated Getting Plowed with the Roushes to win the Warren Coed Softball League on Thursday, Oct. 6. With the win, the team earns free entry to the league next season.
