Lady Vike golfers kick off season with sixth at own invite

The Huntington North High School girls’ varsity golf team finished sixth at its own invitational on Wednesday, Aug. 3, at Norwood Golf Course, in Huntington.

Jaclyn Boyd paced the Lady Vikings with a 90. Amara Eckert contributed a sub-100 score to the team’s register as well, firing a 96. Ashley Hall carded a 100 while Laura Ham posted a 104 to cap Huntington North’s score at 390.

Crosley Stanley was the non-scorer with a 104.

Dinner will benefit youth bowling, pay tribute to former coach’s memory

A chili and hot dog supper in memory of Doug Scott will benefit Huntington County Youth Bowling. The supper will be held on Saturday, Aug. 20, beginning at 5 p.m. in Heritage Hall at the Huntington County Fairgrounds.

Admission is by free will donation.

Scott coached youth bowling for many years at both Rainbow Lanes and Oak Lanes, in Huntington. He also coached boys’ bowling at Huntington North High School, leading the team to the state championship title in the Indiana high school state bowling tournament in 2011.

Sept. 17 run will benefit Love INC

Evangelical United Methodist Church will again sponsor the 5 K Run For Love on Saturday, Sept. 17.  

All of the net proceeds of this event will go to support the ministries of Love In the Name of Christ of Huntington.

Registration forms are available at the church office, the Parkview Huntington Family YMCA, the Huntington Branch of the Huntington City-Township Public Library and Huntington Anytime Fitness. Forms are also available online at e-umc.org.  

Registration for the run/walk will open at 7:30 a.m. The 5K begins at 8:30 a.m. and the Fun Run at 9:15 a.m.  

Zahm completes Ironman Triathlon in NY Lake Placid

Mark Zahm, son of Larry and Kathy Zahm, of Huntington, recently completed the Ironman Triathlon at Lake Placid, NY.

Zahm, 46, crossed the finish line of the July 24 race in 16:29.52, which meant he finished in about the top third of the more than 3,000 competitors, notes Larry Zahm, who traveled to Lake Placid to watch the event.

The younger Zahm completed the 2.4-mile swim in 1:27.00, the 112-mile bike race in 7:39.46 and the 26.2-mile marathon in 6:58.53, Larry Zahm reports.

Karmen Koch, a junior on the Huntington North High School girls’ varsity soccer team, darts past a California Elite defender during a game at the U.S. Youth Soccer Presidents Cup National Championship, which took place July 14 to 17 in Tulsa, OK. Koch played for the U16 Fort Wayne Sport Club Strikers, doing so alongside fellow Huntington County resident Megan Gilpin. The Strikers finished as the tournament’s runner-up, falling to California Elite in the championship game, 3-0.

Travel softball program sets tryouts Aug. 6 through 14

The Indiana Shock travel softball program is looking for players to complete 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U rosters.

The program is a collection of girls’ fast-pitch travel teams and is based in North Manchester. The teams will play in competitive tournaments from fall 2016 through summer 2017.

The Shock teams have access to both indoor and outdoor facilities throughout the year for practices.

All tryouts will be held on the Manchester University softball fields, located at 604 E. College Ave., North Manchester.

Registration open for Parkview Huntington Golf Classic

Registration is open for the 26th annual Parkview Huntington Golf Classic to be held on Aug. 11.

The event features a friendly competition and food, as well as an assortment of auction items and prizes.

The architectural firm Moake Park Group is host sponsor for the event, which takes place at Norwood Golf Course, 5961 W. Maple Grove Rd., west of Huntington.

If God ever provided a better day for base ball in Huntington County this reporter hasn’t seen it.

The sky was so blue you could almost drink it in and the soft white clouds were so fluffy that they could put one to sleep. With the famous Indiana humidity missing and a light breeze from the west, spectators and ballists agreed Huntington was the place for a base ball match.

Huntington native Johnson falls short of Rio Olympics shot

Lauren Johnson fell short of qualifying for the Summer Olympic Games, finishing eighth in the women’s 1,500-meter run final on Sunday, July 10, at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, OR.

Johnson, a Huntington native who now resides in Oregon, clocked in at 4:10.29 in the 12-person field. To qualify for the Olympics, Johnson needed to post a top-three finish.

Viking football camp July 25-27 at Kriegbaum

The Viking Football Fun-damentals Camp, conducted by the Huntington North High School football team, will run Monday, July 25, through Wednesday, July 27, at Kriegbaum Field.

Ages 9 to 11 will attend from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. while ages 12 to 14 will attend from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. each day. Incoming freshman may not participate at the camp. If there is inclement weather, the camp will be held in the Huntington North fieldhouse.
