First Doug Boone Memorial Golf Outing to raise funds for hospice

The first Doug Boone Memorial Golf Outing will be held on Aug. 14 at Norwood Golf Course, with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.

Proceeds from the tournament will be donated to Parkview Hospice Care.

The tournament will be played in a four-person scramble format with teams playing in groups of eight. There is a limit of 36 teams.

The event will include a 50/50 drawing, skins game and raffles for a new Scotty Cameron putter and a new Titleist driver.

VFW Women’s Auxiliary won the Huntington County Baseball 14U Softball Tournament, edging Z-Place Pizza, 5-4, in the championship game at Homier Park on Thursday, June 30. Little League
Novae blanked Builders Mart, 11-0, and Andrews II edged Habitat for Humanity, 10-9, on July 6. The following day, Builders Mart posted a 17-6 win over Andrews II.

S&S Keller finishes PAL Pony League reg. season unbeaten

The Huntington Police Athletic League Pony League finished its regular season on Saturday, July 2.

S&S Keller capped off a perfect campaign, posting 10 wins against zero losses.

Pearson’s Body Shop finished second, racking up eight victories against three defeats. Parkview Huntington Hospital placed third with a mark of 4-6, one loss better than Andrews, which took fourth at 4-7. Troxel Equiment rounded out the league with a record of 1-10.

Johnson gearing up for shot at Olympic team

Huntington North High School and Huntington University alumnus Lauren Johnson will be competing for a spot on the United States Olympic track team for the Rio deJaneiro Olympics this summer. Johnson needs to be one of the top three finishers in her race, the 1,500-meter run.

Huntington North High School and Huntington University alum Lauren Davenport Johnson is less than one week away from potentially turning her dream of competing in the Olympics into reality.

On Thursday, July 7, at 6:26 p.m. PDT, Johnson will be one of 30 athletes to toe the line in the 1,500 meters at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials to vie for the opportunity to make the Team USA roster that will compete at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in August.

HU men’s basketball team sponsors 22nd annual Summer Golf Outing

The Huntington University men’s basketball team is holding its 22nd annual Summer Golf Outing at Norwood Golf Course, in Huntington, on Saturday, July 30.

Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. Following a noon lunch in the clubhouse, the outing will begin with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

There is a fee to attend the outing, which benefits the team. Green fees, cart rental, lunch, door prizes and a season ticket are included in the fee.

The outing is limited to 36 teams of four.

Huntington County Amateur Golf Championship July 9-10 at Etna Acres

The Huntington County Amateur Golf Championship is set for July 9 and 10 at Etna Acres Golf Club and Norwood Golf Course, respectively.

Participants must be residents of Huntington County or a member of a golf course in the county. The tournament will feature assigned tee times, which will be announced the day before play commences. Following the first day of the tournament, players will be positioned into a first flight and a championship flight.

Steve Platt (middle), the former head coach of the Huntington University men’s basketball team, coordinates children at the Forester Basketball Camp, held Thursday, June 23, in Platt Arena. County duo help soccer team punch ticket to national contest

Huntington County residents Megan Gilpin (left) and Karmen Koch helped lead the Fort Wayne Sports Club Strikers U16 girls’ soccer team to a 3-0-1 record at the Region II President’s Cup, a tournament that ran from June 16 to 20 at Grand Park Sports Complex, in Westfield. With their performance at the tournament, the Strikers earned a trip to the National Presidents Cup, set for July 14 to 17 in Tulsa, OK, for the first time ever.

Huntington County residents Megan Gilpin and Karmen Koch recently helped their Fort Wayne Sports Club ‘00 Academy Strikers soccer team advance to the National President’s Cup for the first time ever.

Gilpin, a junior attending Bishop Luers High School and Koch, a junior at Huntington North High School, helped their team advance with three wins and a tie in the Region II (Midwest) President’s Cup held at Grand Park Sports Complex in Westfield from June 16 to 20.
