Stoffel gets 2nd all-state honor at state track meet

Hannah Stoffel ended her career as a member of the Huntington North High School girls’ track and field team on a high note, posting a pair of top-10 finishes in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs at the IHSAA Girls’ Track and Field State Finals, held Friday, June 3, at Indiana University, in Bloomington.

For the second year in a row, Stoffel earned all-state honors in the 1,600. Just as she did last year, she captured fourth in the race, clocking in at 4:55.59.

Stoffel followed up that performance with a 10th place showing in the 3,200. She crossed the finish line in 10:50.23.

Heat second in Bat Wars tournament

The Indiana Heat 10U travel basketball team placed second in the Baseball Players Association Bat Wars Tournament held May 20 through 22 in Warsaw.

After losing both pool play games on Saturday morning and receiving the bottom seed, the Heat finished second in the nine-team field.

This is the team’s fourth tournament with a second-place finish this spring.
The  Heat will next travel to Grand Park in Westfield the weekend of June 10 through 12 to participate in the 30-team Freedom Classic Tournament.

Viking golfers seventh at sectional

The season concluded for the Huntington North High School boys’ golf team with a seventh place finish at the Warsaw Sectional, held Friday, June 3, at Rozella Ford Golf Club, in Warsaw.

While the Vikings failed to qualify for the regional as a team, their top performer on the day, Nolan Betterly, made it to a playoff with three other golfers where two regional spots were on the line. The junior, however, was eliminated on the first hole, ending his hopes of individual advancement.

Championship power boat races at Lake Clare

Outboard hydroplanes speed across Lake Clare in Huntington last year during the Harry Brinkman Memorial Regatta. This year’s regatta will take place Saturday, June 4, and Sunday, June 5, and feature approximately 100 boats racing in more than a dozen categories. Admission to the two-day event is free.

The sixth annual Harry Brinkman Memorial Regatta, featuring races sanctioned by the American Power Boat Association, will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 4 and June 5, at Lake Clare, in Huntington.

Testing starts about 11 a.m. and races begin by noon, continuing until about 6 p.m.

Championship races will be run on Saturday.

Spectators are admitted for free and concessions will be available for purchase at the Huntington Township Fire Department.

Clear Creek, Andrews, both undefeated in HCB through May 23

Standings for the 11U and 14U softball leagues in Huntington County Baseball through the week of May 23 are as follows.

11U
Clear Creek and Andrews were both undefeated with records of 6-0 and 5-0, respectively. Park Drive Oil was a game above .500 with three wins against two losses. Roanoke and Markle were tied with matching 2-4 marks. Coaches Connection sat at 1-3 while Bippus State Bank was 0-6.

Spartans again end Vikings' season at baseball sectional

The season came to an end for the Huntington North High School baseball team at the hands of a familiar foe, as Homestead defeated the Vikings, 7-3, in the championship game of the Huntington North Sectional on Monday, May 30, at Forest Glen Park.

Despite the four-run final margin, the Vikes hung with the Spartans for the majority of the contest, countering Homestead scores in the third and fifth innings to keep their deficit manageable.

Viking cross country coach shows how it's done at Brother Boogie

Huntington North High School boys' varsity cross country coach Curtis Ray Hines showed his team and everyone else for that matter how it's done as he won the Brother Boogie 10K portion of the Nun Run & Brother Boogie by more than a minute on Saturday, May 28, at the St. Felix Oratory.

Hines, 39, of Huntington, clocked in at 39:16.2 to defeat runner-up Joe McFarren, of Liberty Center, by 64 seconds. Tracy Blocker, of Huntington, placed third in 40:39.2, Brad Thomas, of Fort Wayne, was fourth in 43:43.0 and Hunter Funk, of Huntington, was fifth in 44:02.3.

HU's Nash, Donaldson earn All-America honors

Huntington University senior Jake Nash and junior Jean Donaldson each earned All-American honors at the 2016 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Gulf Shores, AL, on Thursday, May 26, and Friday, May 27.

Nash claimed his honor with a leap of 6-6 to place eighth in the high jump on Friday, while Donaldson claimed the same spot in javelin on Thursday with a personal best effort of 137-06.25.

Vikings earn championship match-up with Spartans in diamond sectional

The Huntington North High School baseball team exploded for five runs in the first inning, got one-hit pitching from Kory Goodrich and advanced to the championship game of the Huntington North Baseball Sectional Tournament with an 8-0 win over Fort Wayne North Side on Saturday, May 28.

The Vikings, 19-7, will take on 21-7 Homestead at 6 p.m. in the championship contest. Homestead beat Fort Wayne Wayne, 5-2, on Saturday to earn their ticket to the title match.

Viking 3,200 relay team heading to state

The 3,200-meter relay team of Cody Jones, Brock Spahr, Aaron Hendryx and Elijah Chesterman earned the lone Huntington North High School trip to the state meet at the Marion Boys' Track Regional on Thursday, May 26.

The quartet got the third and final qualifying spot with a time of 8:05.98, almost five seconds better than what it turned it at sectional a week ago.

Carroll won the race in 7:54.67, with Leo second in 8:04.14.

State finals will be held Saturday, June 4, at Indiana University.

Viking golfers get easy "senior night" win

The Huntington North High School boys’ varsity golf team dispatched visiting North Side, 174-229, on "senior night," on Wednesday, May 25.

The Vikings, 6-5 in dual matches, were led by junior Nolan Betterly, who posted a 39. Senior Michael May logged a 42, freshman Martin Harold registered a 46 and senior Jacob Vinson tallied a 47. Senior Zane Cozad totaled a non-scoring 51.

Vike golfers bash Bluffton

The Huntington North High School boys’ varsity golf team defeated Bluffton, 167-189, on Monday, May 23, at Timber Ridge Golf Course, in Bluffton.

Senior Michael May led the Vikings, 5-5 in dual matches, with a 40. Senior Jacob Vinson shot a 41, freshman Martin Harold fired a 42 and senior Luke Stroud carded a 44.

Junior Nolan Betterly produced a non-scoring 45.

McCutcheon shuts down South Side in sectional opener

Alex McCutcheon hurled a two-hit shutout to lead the Huntington North High School baseball team to a 6-0 win over South Side in the opening game of its own sectional tournament, held Wednesday, May 25, at Huntington University’s Forest Glen Park.

McCutcheon, a senior, dominated the Archers from start to finish. He racked up 11 strikeouts in seven innings and issued no walks to claim his fifth win against two losses.

Seven from HU track teams ready for nationals this weekend

Seven members from the Huntington University men’s and women’s track and field teams will represent the school at the 2016 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, slated for May 26 to 28 at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, AL.

No stranger to the national stage, senior Jake Nash will be making his second consecutive trip to NAIA outdoor nationals in high jump. His resume also includes three appearances at the indoor championships, where he has earned All-America honors twice.
