Season for Huntington County Baseball opens on Friday

Huntington County Baseball will open its 2016 season on Friday, April 29.

Ballplayers will participate in a parade on Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Huntington North High School. The parade will travel down Jefferson Street to Evergreen Road, then to Homier Park.

Games will be played on  all diamonds Friday after the parade. The games will be followed by fireworks at 9 p.m.

Games will be held all day on Saturday, April 30.

Puterbaugh, Sheets slam door on USF in twinbill sweep

Emily Puterbaugh and Ariel Sheets allowed only one run on the day to lead the Huntington University softball team to a twinbill sweep of host University of Saint Francis, 5-1, and 6-0, on Tuesday, April 26.

Puterbaugh handcuffed the Cougars on five hits in the opener, allowing the only USF run of the day, before Sheets gave up only six hits, with no runs as HU improved to 30-14 overall, 23-9 in Crossroads League play.

Foresters walk to extra innings win to split twinbill with Bethel

Brock Gower pitched six innings of one-run ball and the Huntington University baseball team pushed across two runs in the 10th inning of the second game with two bases-loaded walks to salvage a doubleheader split with host Bethel College on Tuesday, April 26.

The Foresters absorbed an 11-0 shellacking in the first game, but captured game two, 5-3, to improve to 16-25 on the season overall, 11-9 in the Crossroads League.

HU women's golf team last at Crossroads League Championships

The Huntington University women's golf team wrapped up its inaugural season with a last place finish at the Crossroads League Championships on Monday and Tuesday, April 25 and 26, at the NorthStar Golf Club, hosted by Mount Vernon Nazarene University.

After shooting rounds of 402 and 413 on Monday, HU saved its best for last as the Foresters shot a season-low 394 in their final 18 holes on Tuesday to finish with a 1,209.

As has been the case all season, freshman Abby Poole paced the Foresters with a 259 to finish 18th out of 44 golfers.

Lady Vikes SB loses slulgfest to Whitko, 15-9

The Huntington North High School varsity softball team lost a 15-9 slugfest to host Whitko on Tuesday, April 26.

The Lady Vikes, 7-3, got three hits and three runs batted in from Aubrie Eckert and three hits from Kelsie Vogleman. Mackenzi Cannici had two hits and three RBI, Ariene Butler had two hits and an RBI and Alexa Hill and Erin Burke each had a hit and a ribby.

Arnold couldn't stop Whitko at all, throwing a complete game of six innings and giving up 15 hits, with five strikeouts and three walks.

Doubles win lone highlight for Lady Vike netgirls in loss

The first doubles team of Sarah Fryman and Emily Karst picked up the lone win on the day for the Huntington North High School girls' varsity tennis team as it fell to host East Noble, 1-4, on Tuesday, April 26.

The Lady Viking seniors lost the first set, 3-6, before bouncing back with sets of 7-5 and 6-2 to get the lone HNHS victory as the team dropped to 1-6 on the season.

Viking golfers lose by a stroke to Norwell

The Huntington North High School boys' varsity golf team lost by a stroke to host Norwell, 172-173, on Tuesday, April 26.

Nolan Betterly and Michael May each posted rounds of 42 to lead the Vikings, 1-3 overall and 1-2 in Northeast 8 Conference play. Martin Harold was a shot back at 43 and Jacob Vinson posted a 46.

Zane Cozad fired a non-scoring 53.

The HNHS junior varsity took a close win, 196-200.

Luke Stroud topped the JV with a 46, Jack Young fired a 47, Hunter Schwob shot a 49 and Jared Smith completed the team with a 54.

Full-team effort earns Viking trackboys three-way win

It was a full-team effort as the Huntington North High School boys' varsity track team narrowly edged Leo to win a three-way meet with DeKalb at Kriegbaum Field on Tuesday, April 26.

Getting four wins, the Vikings scored 64.5 points while Leo pulled in 60.5 and DeKalb scored 42.

Brock Spahr led three Vikings across the finish line for points in the 1,600-meter run to lead to HNHS' best points total of the afternoon. Spahr won the race in 4:40.0, with teammates Jacob Wust and Jackson Wright placing third and fourth, respectively, in 4:55.4 and 4:57.1.

Huntington's Tackett captures second career PBA title

Huntington native EJ Tackett captured his second career title on the Professional Bowlers Association Tour, winning the PBA Xtra Frame Storm Open on Sunday, April 24.

Tackett defeated Ryan Ciminelli, 217-210, in the championship match of the tournament, which was held at Liberty Lanes, in Carpentersville, IL.

The tourney commenced on Saturday, April 23, with a pair of eight-game sessions that saw the top 16 players move on. Tackett posted a score of 1,975 in his session to advance in third place.

Butler's two dingers go for naught in loss to EN

Ariene Butler blasted two home runs but the Huntington North High School varsity softball team still took it on the chin against East Noble, 15-6, on Monday, April 25.

Alyssa Voght also smacked a homer and both she and Butler knocked in two runs apiece for the Lady Vikes, 7-2 overall and 0-1 in the Northeast 8 Conference.

East Noble rocked Lady Vike hurler Hannah Middlebrooks for 14 hits and eight earned runs in six innings. Middlebrooks had three strikeouts and no walks. Kendra Arnold finished up the final inning, giving up three hits, with two strikeouts and one walk.

Senior Jacob Vinson fired an 82 to lead the Huntington North High School boys’ varsity golf team to third place at its own invitational, held Saturday, April 23, at Norwood Golf Club.

Vinson’s score earned him fourth place overall at the invite. Freshman Martin Harold and junior Nolan Betterly both finished just a stroke behind their teammate, with matching scores of 83, while senior Michael May carded an 88 to cap the Vikings’ score at 336.

Junior Jared Smith shot a non-scoring 90.

Koch leads HNHS trackgirls at Penn

Karmen Koch won the 300-meter hurdles and finished in the top four in two other events to help the Huntington North High School girls’ varsity track and field team place seventh at the Lady Kingsmen Invitational, hosted by Penn on Saturday, April 23.

Koch edged Northrop’s Kyara Muhammad by a tenth of a second for gold in the 300 hurdles, crossing the finish line in :46.10. The sophomore competed in the 100-meter hurdles as well, claiming fifth in :16.22. She rounded out her big day with a fourth-place finish in high jump, leaping 5-02.
