HNHS JV softball squad drops pair

The Huntington North High School junior varsity softball team lost two hard-fought games on Saturday, April 16, to host Culver Military Academy, falling 13-11 and 12-9.

Starting the season 0-2, the Lady Vikes' JV was led by Faith Leist with seven hits, including two doubles, and seven runs batted in for the day. Erika Vinson had four doubles among six hits, with four RBI, and Abby Clarke had two doubles among four hits.

Harter, Hicks and relay earn Little State titles for HU

Mariah Harter won the 200-meter dash and ran a leg of a winning relay team to lead the Huntington University women’s track and field team at the Little State Championships, held Friday, April 15, and Saturday, April 16, at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Harter, a freshman, won the dash in :25.05, which both qualified her for the NAIA Outdoor Nationals and broke the Huntington record, set by Julia LeMaster-Boroff in 1990.

Hanover drops small HU netmen's team

Playing several athletes down, the Huntington University men’s tennis team started behind the eight ball against visiting Hanover College on Saturday, April 16, as it defaulted three matches on its way to suffering a 2-7 loss.

Senior Joseph Straznicky, playing in the final home match of his career, won at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles to pace the Foresters. He teamed up with Giovanni Martinez in doubles to breeze past Dakota Smith and Reid Clark, 8-2, before beating Smith in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, for his second win of the day.

Nun Run, Bro Boogie on May 28

The Nun Run 5K and Brother Boogie 10K will be held on May 28, beginning and ending at St. Felix Oratory, 1280 Hitzfield St., Huntington.

Participants may run or walk in either event, which both begin at 9:15 a.m.

Entry forms are available at the Parkview Huntington Family YM-CA, Anytime Fitness, Huntington Catholic School, Victory Noll Center and Zay Leasing and Rentals. Forms may also be obtained online at www.runrace.net.

Proceeds will go to Huntington Catholic Sch-ool Booster Club.

Vikes put on offensive show for two wins Saturday

The Huntington North High School varsity baseball team put on an offensive clinic at Wabash, obliterating the hosts, 11-0, before trouncing South Bend Washington, 14-1, on Saturday, April 16.

The Vikings, 5-2, banged out 23 hits in the two games. Over half of those base pokes came against Wabash, whom Huntington North put in a 5-0 hole after the first inning, then buried even deeper with six runs in the next frame.

Vikes' 3,200-meter relay team highlights track effort at North Side

A winning effort by the 3,200-meter relay team highlighted the efforts of the Huntington North High School boys' track team in an eighth place performance at the North Side Relays on Saturday, April 16.

The quartet of Cody Jones, Elijah Chesterman, Brock Spahr and Isaac Smith sped to their win in 8:11.08, putting then in at fifth on the HNHS school records for the event.

Viking golfers place sixth at Carroll Invitational

The Huntington North High School boys' varsity golf team finished sixth out of 14 teams at the Carroll Invitational on Saturday, April 16, at Autumn Ridge Golf Course in Fort Wayne.

Martin Harold paced the Vikings'  efforts with an 83, followed by Noland Betterly with an 86 and Jacob Vinson and Michael May with matching scores of 89.

Zane Cozad was non-scorer with a 106.

The Viking's junior varsity played at Round Barn and placed second out of 10 teams with a score of 374.

Marian wins twinbill showdown with HU softball team

In a showdown between the top two squads in the Crossroads League, the Huntington University softball team fell twice to conference-leader Marian University, 1-0 and 8-5, on Saturday, April 16, at Huntington.

Entering the day with a chance to tie the Knights for the best record in league play, the Foresters instead slipped to 23-11 overall, 16-6 in conference, while the Knights improved to 28-6, 20-2.

Vinson, Harold lead Vike golfers past DeKalb

Jacob Vinson and Martin Harold both broke 40 to lead the Huntington North High School boys' varsity golf team past visiting DeKalb, 162-165, on Thursday, April 14.

Vinson led the way with a 37 and Harold had a 39 as the Vikings evened their mark at 1-1 on the season.

Noland Betterly stroked a 42 and Michael May had a 44 to round out the HNHS scoring.

Zane Cozad was non-scorer with a 48.

The HNHS junior varsity also won, topping DeKalb 188-199, in its first action of the season.

Hahn, Morris lead Vike JV to romp over Warsaw

Matt Hahn gave up no runs in four innings of work and Konner Mason had a home run and three runs batted in to lead the Huntington North High School junior varsity baseball team to an 11-0 romp over visiting Warsaw on Thursday, April 14.

The JV Vikings banged out 10 hits in the contest, with Collin Landrum, Mason Landrum, Morris and Lesperance each having a pair. Collin Landrum and Lesperance each knocked in two runs.

Mason Landrum pitched a scoreless fifth to finish off the game.

HU women, IWU split key conference match-up

The Huntington University softball team and host Indiana Wesleyan University played a pair of one-run games, with the Foresters taking the first, 5-4, and the Wildcats the second, 2-1, on Friday, April 15.

Huntington, 23-9 overall, 16-4 in the Crossroads League, and Indiana Wesleyan, 27-9, 15-5, entered the day second and third, respectively, in league standings and their doubleheader did not disappoint, with the fate of each game in question until the final inning.
