Forester SB team sweeps Bethel

The Huntington University softball team swept host Bethel College, 3-2 and 10-6, on Thursday, April 14.

The Foresters, 22-8 overall, 15-3 in Crossroads League play, mounted a comeback in the seventh inning to take the opening game. Going into the frame trailing 2-1, freshman Marty Harris drew a walk, then senior Emily O’Leary smacked a triple to knot the game. Two batters later, junior Bess Fiechter laid down a squeeze bunt to plate O’Leary for what proved to be the game-winning run.

Lady Vikes squeak past Woodlan

The Huntington North High School varsity softball team squeaked by visiting Woodlan, 2-1, on Thursday, April 14.

Hannah Middlebrooks tossed a three-hitter to earn the win for the Lady Vikings, 3-0. The junior hurler, 1-0, permitted one earned run while walking four and striking out six.

Mackenzi Cannici and Aubrie Eckert backed up Middlebrooks’ pitching. The juniors each drove in a run, Cannici’s coming on a single while Eckert’s came via a triple.

Goodrich and friends swamp Warsaw

Kory Goodrich pitched a one-hitter and Hunter Welch and Thomas Parker each knocked in three runs as the Huntington North High School varsity baseball team swamped visiting Warsaw, 10-0, in five innings on Thursday, April 14.

Goodrich, a senior right-hander, went through the Warsaw lineup like a hot knife through butter, yielding just the lone safety while striking out five and walking two to improve to 2-0 on the season. His teammates meanwhile, were banging out 10 hits against a trio of Warsaw pitchers as the Vikings improved to 3-2 on the season.

Adam Central dominates HNHS netgirls

A three-set win by the first doubles team of Sarah Fryman and Emily Karst was the lone highlight of the day for the Huntington North High School girls' varsity tennis team as it fell to host Adam Central, 1-4, on Thursday, April 14.

The Lady Vike seniors came back to defeat Randi Bebout and Jenni Baumer, 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, although it wasn't enough to keep the Lady Vikings from dropping to 1-2 on the season.

Puterbaugh gem helps HU women split twinbill

Emily Puterbaugh pitched a one-hit gem to guide the Huntington University softball team past visiting Goshen College, 4-0, in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 13.

The triumph avenged a 10-3 loss in the opening contest that snapped a 10-game winning streak for the Foresters, 20-8, 13-3 in Crossroads League play.

Puterbaugh continued her impressive senior campaign, racking up nine strikeouts while going the distance in the circle to pick up her 11th win of the season against just two losses.

Southwood edges Lady Vike netgirls

The Huntington North High School girls’ varsity tennis team got edged by host Southwood, 2-3, on Wednesday, April 13.

The key match came at second doubles where the Lady Vikings’ Haley Hart and Anna Schroeder went four sets with the Lady Knights’ Hannah King and Brooke Wyatt. Hart and Schroeder won the opening set, 6-4, but narrowly lost the second, 5-7. The third set, a 6-7 tiebreaker thriller, went to the Southwood duo to eke out the win.

Lady Vikes softball squad trounces Jay County

The Huntington North High School varsity softball team trounced visiting Jay County, 11-1, on Wednesday, April 13.

Sophomore Alyssa Voght highlighted the Lady Vikings’ big day at the plate with four runs batted in on two hits, one of which was a home run. Huntington North, 2-0, also got a double and two RBI from junior Aubrie Eckert and two hits and an RBI from sophomore Bailey Hughes.

Pitcher Kendra Arnold improved to 2-0, racking up 10 strikeouts in six innings. The sophomore yielded seven base pokes and one earned run while walking two.

Athletic physical clinic at HNHS on June 2

Huntington North High School Athletic Department, Parkview Huntington Hospital and Parkview Sports Medicine will host an athletic physical clinic on Thursday, June 2, at Huntington North.

HNHS Door No. 28 will be open at 6 p.m., and will close at 7:30 p.m. to allow doctors to see all athletes by 8 p.m.  These physicals are offered for athletes entering grades 6 to12. There is a cost for the physical.

Athletes must have a physical on file that is completed after April 1, 2016, in order to participate in athletics during the 2016-17 school year.

Huntington Baptist to host 14th annual 5K run

Huntington Baptist Chu-rch will sponsor its 14th annual Community 5K Run and Fun Run event on Saturday, April 23.

This free event is open to the community and participants of all ages. The race begins and ends at the Huntington Baptist Chur-ch, 2435 Waterworks Rd.

The 5K run will begin at 9 a.m. with the one-mile fun run to follow.

Information, online registration and registration forms can be found on line at www.huntingtonbap tist.org. or FWTC.org. Free T-shirts are available to the first 75 who pre-register.

Huntington University men’s hoop team hosting 14th annual camp

The Huntington University men’s basketball team is holding its 14th annual Forester Basketball Camp from June 20 to 23 at Platt Arena in the Merillat Complex.

Youth entering kindergarten through ninth grade next school year are invited to attend. The camp will be split into two sessions each day, with sixth through ninth-graders attending from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and kindergarteners through fifth-graders attending from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Lady Vike netgirls down Peru in opener

A pair of shutout wins among four victories earned the Huntington North High School girls' varsity tennis team a season-opening win over visiting Peru on Tuesday, April 12.

Junior Alyssa Hewson at third singles and the first doubles team of Sarah Fryman and Emily Karst recorded the whitewashes for HNHS. Hewson took down Kaitlyn Trexler, 6-0, 6-0, and the doubles team topped Marjon Rafie and Dani McCord by the same tally.

Distance, Coolman lead HNHS trackboys over Columbia City

The Huntington North High School boys' track team dominated the distances and got twin wins from weight man Jared Coolman to defeat host Columbia City, 72.5-59.5, on Tuesday, April 12.

The Vikings got 1-2 finishes in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs as well as winning the 3,200-meter relay to back up the efforts of Coolman, who claimed the discus with a heave of 126-3 and the shot with a throw of 47-2. The junior actually led a sweep in both events as Mitch McElhaney was second and Andrew Schenkel third in both events.
