Depleted Forester track squad 14th at Hanover invite

The Huntington University men’s track and field team placed 14th at the Hanover College Invitational on Saturday, April 2.

Missing several performers due to injury, the Foresters finished with 13 points behind Kai Foday’s third-place showing in javelin with a toss of 46.07 meters.

Wyatt Jones scored twice in sprints, finishing seventh in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes, clocking it at :11.61 and :23.43, respectively.

HU men’s hoop team hosting camp June 20-23

The Huntington University men’s basketball team will host its 14th annual summer basketball camp June 20 to 23, at the Merillat Complex Platt Gymnasium.

Youth in grades kindergarten through nine are welcome to attend. There is a cost for registry.

Registration forms for the camp are available at the Huntington University Athletic Office or online at www.huntington.edu/athletics/mens-basketball.

Hurlers Puterbaugh, Sheets lead HU women to twinbill sweep

Emily Puterbaugh and Ariel Sheets pitched the Huntington University softball team to a sweep of host Purdue University Calumet, 4-0 and 5-4, on Friday, April 1.

The talented senior hurlers limited the Peregrines to just seven hits in the doubleheader. With the sweep, the Foresters extend their winning streak to six games and improve to 15-7.

Roser walk-off hit helps HU split with IWU

A walk-off hit by Adam Roser made the Huntington University baseball team a 2-1 winner in extra innings over visiting Indiana Wesleyan University in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday, April 1.

The Wildcats avenged the loss in the second half of the evening’s twinbill, edging the Foresters, 5-4.

Huntington, 9-18, 4-2 in Crossroads League play, got a seven-hit gem from pitcher Brock Gower in the opener. Gower, a senior, tossed all nine innings in the contest, yielding just an earned run, with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Shane Stetzel (right) received the Charlie Crowl Volunteer of the Year award from Huntington Catholic School Athletic Director Glendon Yoder at the school’s sports banquet on March 9. Stetzel has coached the fifth and sixth-grade boys’ basketball team at the school for several years.

IHSAA awards one of 13 Cato Memorial Scholarships to Stoffel

Hannah Stoffel, a student athlete at Huntington North High School, has been awarded a $2,500 C. Eugene Cato Memorial Scholarship.

She is one of 13 student athletes from across Indiana to receive the award through the Indiana High School Athletic Association.

The recipients will be recognized on April 14, at the Indiana Roof Ballroom, in downtown Indianapolis, as part of the 11th annual Thomas A. Brady Sports Achievement Awards established by Methodist Sports Medicine.

Stoffel is ranked sixth in her graduating class of 357 and carries a 4.16 grade point average.

HU double dips Taylor

The Huntington University softball team won the first game in an extra inning, 5-1, and then walloped host Taylor in the nightcap, 9-0, for a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday, March 29.

Improving to 13-7 overall and 8-2 in Crossroads League play, the Foresters exploded for four runs in the eighth inning to outlast Taylor in the opener, then rode a two-homer game by former HNHS standout Alyssa Hiple and a two-hit mound performance by Ariel Sheets to an easy second game triumph.

No. 23 Tech bats wake up, beat up on HU

After both teams played scoreless baseball through four innings, the bats of No. 23 Indiana Tech woke up and wound up scoring eight runs in the final five frames to dispatch host Huntington University, 8-3, on Tuesday, March 29.

Forester frosh Connor West held Tech scoreless through four and yielded just a single earned tally in five innings of work, but it was enough to get tagged with the loss as the Forester relief corps didn't provide any help.

Crowley, Moore lead HU past Morris

Mike Crowley backed the three-hit pitching of freshman hurler DJ Moore with two hits and two runs batted in as the Huntington University baseball team topped visiting Robert Morris University, 7-2, on Monday, March 28.

Moore picked up his first collegiate win by yielding just one unearned run, striking out six and walking two in five innings. Caleb Landrum pitched the final four frames, fiving up three hits and one run to help HU win its fourth straight game and improve to 8-16 on the season.

Lady Vikes 14th at Hoosier State Relays

The Huntington North High School girls’ varsity track team placed 14th out of 41 teams at the Indoor Hoosier State Relays on Saturday, March 26, at Purdue University.

The Lady Vikings’ distance medley team posted the team’s best finish on the day, capturing second in 12:25.78. The clocking, achieved by the quartet of Marissa Jamison, Brooke Goodrich, Karmen Koch and Hannah Stoffel, broke the school record and was also the 11th-fastest time in that event in state history.

Emily Puterbaugh pitched a one-hitter in the opener and the Huntington University softball team bats put up nine runs in the nightcap in a doubleheader sweep of visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday, March 26.

The Foresters, 11-7 overall and 6-2 in the Crossroads League, rode Puterbaugh's gem to a 3-0 win in the first game, then got a 9-2 triumph in the nightcap.

Puterbaugh, a senior, dominated the Cougar bats, striking out nine and not walking a batter in addition to allowing the lone safety.

Gower helps HU baseball team to twinbill sweep

Brock Gower knocked in a a pair of runs in both games to help the Huntington University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of host Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday, March 26.

The Foresters, 7-16 overall and 3-1 in the Crossroads League, topped the Cougars in the opener, 6-1, before recording a 4-1 win in the second game for the sweep.

Tyson Dietrich posted his first win of the year in the opener, limiting the Cougars, 14-9, to just six hits over seven innings, with five strikeouts and just one walk.
