Snyder shines on senior night but gymnasts lose

The Huntington North High School varsity gymnastics team got another strong performance from Carly Snyder, but came up short to visiting Wawasee, 103.250-102.075, on senior night, Thursday, Feb. 18.

Snyder took first in three of the four events and placed second in the other to capture the all-around title with a register of 35.450. The senior topped vault with a score of 8.750; balance beam with a 9.075; and the floor exercise with a 9.550. She earned her silver on the uneven parallel bars with an 8.075.

Lady Vike bowlers win third state championship

The Huntington North High School girls’ bowling team won the state championship on Saturday, Feb. 20, with a victory over Elkhart Memorial in the tournament final at Mike Aulby’s Arrowhead Bowl, in Lafayette. The Huntington North High School girls’ bowling team won the state tournament on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Mike Aulby’s Arrowhead Bowl, in Lafayette.

The Lady Vikings topped Elkhart Memorial in the championship match, posting scores of 149-226 versus the Lady Chargers’ 157-150.

The state title, the team’s third in its history, caps a dominant postseason run that saw it win the Bluffton Sectional, earn second at the Noblesville Regional and claim the Anderson Semi-state crown.

Foresters getting ready for season in ‘facelifted’ Forest Glen Park

Last May, the Huntington University baseball team was finishing up its season. The Foresters’ final game came at Forest Glen Park, their prized home field, tucked away in a scenic wooded valley on the north end of campus.

A month later, most of the park, including the dugout where players and coaches sat weeks earlier, would be gone.

The field stayed. So did the lights. But everything else was razed as an $800,000 renovation project commenced, filling the park with the sound of hammers rather than baseball bats.

Palmer scores 29 but HU women lose regular season finale

Despite getting a game-high 29 points from Miranda Palmer, the Huntington University women’s basketball team fell to host Taylor University in its regular-season finale, 70-63, on Saturday, Feb. 20.

The loss had significant ramifications in the final league standings as a win would have landed the Foresters in the fifth spot, but instead they will head into the conference tournament as the seventh seed. Coach Lori Culler’s squad will take on host Goshen, seeded second, on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m.

Foresters finish regular season with loss to Taylor

The Huntington University men’s basketball team came up short to visiting Taylor University, 77-72, on Saturday, Feb. 20.

Finishing the regular season on a five-game losing streak, the Foresters, 13-17, 7-11 in Crossroads League play, enter the conference tournament seeded seventh. They will hit the road to face the No. 2 seed, Indiana Wesleyan University, on Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m.

Barton a silver finisher in breaststroke at sectional finals

A silver finish by Cody Barton was the closest any member of the Huntington North High School boys’ swim team came to state advancement during the finals of the Warsaw Sectional on Saturday, Feb. 20.

Barton, a junior, swam the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.55, shaving nearly a second off his preliminary time. Despite his performance, the race’s winner, Matt Wildman, of Warsaw, was not seriously challenged, having clocked in at 1:02.90.

Forester diamond men lose close twice in opening games

The Huntington University baseball team opened its season with a pair of narrow defeats to host Campbellsville University, 3-1, 2-1, on Friday, Feb. 19.

The nightcap saw the Foresters, 0-2, take a 1-0 lead in the third inning before the Tigers, 4-0, scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to seize the lead.

Michael Crowley put Huntington on the board, singling home Dylan Henricks, who reached base with a one-bagger, then advanced to third on a single by Dalton Combs.

2 Vikes, 3 relays earn swimming sectional finals

Senior Zane Cozad, junior Cody Barton and three relay teams advanced to the finals of the Warsaw Swimming & Diving Sectional on Saturday, Feb. 20, with their performances at the sectional preliminaries on Thursday night, Feb. 18.

Cozad earned his top-eight placings in the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle, while Barton earned his in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard breaststroke. Both also qualified as part of the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay teams, and will be joined as finals qualifers by the 200-yard freestyle relay team as well.

Big night by senior trio pays off for HU women

A big night by its senior trio propelled the Huntington University women’s basketball team to a 70-52 win over visiting Spring Arbor University on senior night, Wednesday, Feb. 17.

Senior Kelsey Hubble tallied 18 points for the Foresters, 17-12, 7-10 in Crossroads League play, while fellow senior Amelia Recker generated 16 points and 11 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. Senior Jaclene Bonnema rounded out the triumvirate’s production with 10 boards and six points.

HU kicks off basketball game with tailgate fete

The Huntington University Alumni Association will host an indoor tailgate party for alumni, friends and fans of the Foresters on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.

The tailgate party, which takes place in the upper level of the Habecker Dining Commons, will precede the men’s basketball game against Taylor University. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. in the Platt Arena.

The public is invited to attend. The cost of admission includes the game ticket and lunch.
