Lady Vike relays cut times, but don't advance to state swim meet

Two Huntington North High School relay teams cut significant time from their preliminary clockings in the Warsaw Girls Swim Sectional Finals on Saturday, Feb. 6, but still won't be advancing to the state meet next week.

Freshman Macy Lange also won't be advancing in her individual events, the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke.

Winners in the finals, along with anyone swimming a state standard time and then the next-fastest swimmers to fill a 32-person field advance to the state meet on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13, at the Indiana University Natatorium.

Comeback attempt falls short for HU women

A fourth-quarter comeback attempt by the Huntington University women’s basketball team fell short and host Goshen defeated the Foresters, 75-72, on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Huntington trailed the entire contest and entered the final frame stuck in a 67-53 hole. Miranda Palmer, limited to just eight points for the Foresters through the game’s first three quarters, came to life in the period, tallying nine points to help Huntington make a game of it.

Johnson lone Viking to qualify for mat semi-state

Zack Johnson, a junior on the Huntington North High School wrestling team, placed second in the 113-pound weight class at the Carroll Regional on Saturday, Feb. 6, to earn a spot at semi-state.

Of the six Vikings to make the trip to Carroll, Johnson was the only one to punch his ticket to the New Haven Semi-state, slated for Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, in Fort Wayne. To advance, a wrestler needed to win in the opening round.

Macy Lange and a pair of relay teams were still in the running for the state meet as they earned spots in the finals of the Warsaw Girls Swim Sectional on Thursday night, Feb. 4.

Lange, a freshman, placed sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke, in 1:20.05, and eighth in the 100-yard freestyle, in 1:01.01, to earn her invitation back to Warsaw for the finals and a chance at state on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Carroll buries Vikes with second-half FTs

Visiting Carroll buried the Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team with free throws in the second half of their game on Wednesday, Feb. 3, sticking the Vikings with a 62-44 loss.

The Chargers clicked on 19 of 23 freebie tries for 82.6 percent in the second stanza, turning a 24-20 halftime lead into a 39-30 advantage after three quarters before doubling it to a cushion of 60-42 in the final frame for its widest margin of the game.

HU women’s basketball team to host 8th annual Pink Out

The Huntington University women’s basketball team will host its eighth annual Pink Out on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 1 p.m. in the school’s Merillat Complex.

Pink Out is an event to raise awareness and resources to advance breast cancer education and research. Proceeds from gate receipts, donations and “pink” popcorn sales will benefit the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer.

Foresters hang on for nail-biter win over Grace

Daniel Woll blocked a potential game-winning shot by a Grace University player at the buzzer and the Huntington University men's basketball team held on for a 71-70 win over the host Lancers Tuesday night, Feb. 2.

The Foresters, 13-12 overall and 7-6 in the Crossroads League, were clinging to the lead in part thanks to a Devon Merder three-ball that had them up 70-66 with just under two minutes left in the contest.

Hicks breaks trio of HU records at Trine invite

Christina Hicks, a junior on the Huntington University women’s track and field team, won three events to highlight the team’s stop at the Trine University Don and Riley Zimmer Classic, held Friday, Jan. 29.

Hicks topped triple jump with a leap of 11.40 meters. The effort not only broke the school record, which Hicks already held, but met the NAIA qualifying mark, securing her a spot at the indoor national championships, set for March 3 through 5 in Johnson City, TN.

Nash a double-winner at Trine invite

Jake Nash was a two-time winner for the Huntington University men’s track and field team at the Trine University Don and Riley Zimmer Classic, held Friday, Jan. 29.

Nash, a senior, won high jump and triple jump with leaps of 1.98 meters and 13.19 meters, respectively.

Sophomore Codi Wiersema logged Huntington’s only other podium finish, placing second out of 25 competitors in the 3,000-meter run with a clocking of 9:32.52.

Frosh hoop team at 13-1

The Huntington North High School boys’ freshmen basketball team walloped host DeKalb, 40-17, on Saturday, Jan. 30.

Sawyer Stoltz and Trey Williams led the Vikings, 13-1, with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Stoltz also produced five rebounds, as many steals, and two blocks while Williams dished out five assists and notched four boards.

Hinen's 27 lead Foresters past Marian

Derek Hinen scored 27 points to lead the Huntington University men’s basketball team over visiting Marian University, 88-79, on Saturday, Jan. 30.

Hinen, a junior, tossed in six points for the Foresters during a 13-2 run in the opening half that saw them turn a one-point lead, 25-24, into a 12-point advantage, 38-26, with 5:30 remaining until halftime.
