Haught helps HNHS grapplers take second at Concordia Invite

Behind Ricky Haught’s individual title and three runner-up showings, the Huntington North High School varsity wrestling team claimed second at the Concordia Lutheran Invitational, held Saturday, Jan. 16.

Haught, a freshman, captured the crown in the 126-pound weight class. Senior Chandler Updike, at 182, junior Eli Parrett, at 170 and sophomore Gage Bustos, at 138, achieved the Vikings’ silver medals.

Senior Jerry Gardner and junior Zack Johnson, wrestling at heavyweight and 113 pounds, respectively, rounded out the team’s podium finishes with third-place efforts.

Perfect shooting night by Fryman leads HNHS girls to big win

A perfect shooting night by Sarah Fryman highlighted a 60-36 rout of visiting Columbia City by the Huntington North High School girls’ varsity basketball team on Saturday, Jan. 16.

Fryman hit all seven of her shots from the field and all three of her free throw attempts to finish with a game-high 17 points for the Lady Vikings, 13-4 overall, 3-2 in the Northeast 8 Conference. The senior standout also pulled down seven rebounds.

Columbia City wins battle of patience over Vikings

Host Columbia City won a game of patience by hitting its shots and beat the Huntington North High School boys' varsity basketball team, 41-27, on Friday, Jan. 15.

The Vikings, 9-6, and Eagles, 10-4, evenly split only 50 shots from the field, but while HNHS was hitting only nine of 25 for 36 percent, CC hit 16 of its 25 for 64 percent. The Eagles took a 12-9 lead after the first quarter, were up 19-16 at halftime and led 32-23 after three quarters.

Cozad, Barton lead Vike swimmers over Wabash

Zane Cozad and Cody Barton recorded two wins apiece to lead the Huntington North High School boys’ varsity swim team over host Wabash, 96-50, on Tuesday, Jan. 12.

Cozad, a senior, was golden in two freestyle events, winning the 200-yarder in 2:06.24 and the 100-yarder in :57.04. Barton, a junior, triumphed in the 50-yard freestyle, stopping the timer in :24.23, and the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:07.89.

Lawson to continue hoop career at HU

Four leagues again offered as PAL baseball registration starts Friday

The Huntington Police Athletic League will begin accepting baseball registrations on Friday, Jan. 15.

The PAL offers four leagues: T-ball, coaches pitch, little league and pony league.

Last year marked the first time a pony league had been offered at the PAL and the league’s secretary-treasurer, Tom Hughes, reports that it went over well and says he hopes to see it grow in its second year.

Overall, Hughes estimates that the PAL had 380 participants last season. He notes that the PAL will once again partner with the Andrews Lions Club.

Snyder, Bates get wins as Lady Vikes fourth at Homestead

Carly Snyder and Brianna Bates each won an event as the Huntington North High School gymnastics team placed fourth at the Homestead Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 9.

Snyder won the floor exercise with a score of 9.40, while Bates topped her teammate by .05 to win the vault with a score of 8.85 as the Lady Vikings piled up 99.15 points as a team.

Carroll won the title with a score of  102.20, with Homestead second at 101.20, East Noble third at 99.95 and DeKalb last at 98.15.

Snyder wins two but HNHS gymnasts lose opener

Carly Snyder won two events and the all-around but host DeKalb downed the Huntington North High School gymnastics team, 99.850-96.200, on Tuesday, Jan. 5.

Snyder, a senior, was tops in vault with a score of 8.800 and was first on uneven parallel bars with a score of 8.050. She also placed second on the balance beam with a score of 8.900 and second on the floor exercise, again with an 8.900, to wind up with an all-around score of 34.650 to defeat DeKalb's Caitlin Morrow by .750.

Pilots' second-half run stops Foresters

Thirteenth-ranked Bethel blew a tight game open in the second half on the way to defeating the visiting Huntington University men's basketball team, 103-82, on Tuesday, Jan. 12.

The Foresters, 9-10, were down by just three points at halftime but Bethel outscored them 27-9 in the first nine minutes of the second half on the way to earning its 14th win in 18 outings.

Hollowelll throws in 3 at buzzer to give Vikes win over Concordia

Junior Hunter Hollowell threw in a running three-pointer as time expired to give the Huntington North High School boys' varsity basketball team a 54-51 win over visiting Concordia on Tuesday, Jan. 12.

Hollowell's shot, from just inside the HN logo at halfcourt, came after he took the inbounds pass from Luke Pulver with four seconds to go and went past midcourt. It gave the Vikings their ninth win against five losses this season.

The junior wound up leading HNHS with 17 points. Konner Platt added 11 points, Luke Stroud had nine and Sam Daugherty popped in seven.
