Koons' two wins not enough for Viking swimmers at Oak Hill

Junior Jacob Koons had two of the five Huntington North High School boys' swim team wins on the night, but host Oak Hill was way too deep for the Vikings and won 122-58, on Monday, Jan. 11.

Koons claimed the 200-yard freestyle in 2:08.08 and came back to win the 100-yard freestyle in :56.73 as the Vikings pretty much held their own in the wins column, but Oak Hill usually had multiple scorers in every event.

Oak Hill swimmers too much for HNHS girls

A strong, deep host Oak Hill team beat up on the Huntington North High School girls' swim team,  127-53, on Monday night, Jan. 11.

The Lady Vikings, 4-9, got wins from freshman Macy Lange, junior Alivia Eiting and senior Kaitlin Biehl. Lange won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:38.03, Eiting was number one in the 50-yard freestyle in :30.22 and Biehl touched home first in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:09.47.

MVNU edges HU women

The Huntington University women’s basketball team got edged by host Mount Vernon Nazarene, 58-55, on Saturday, Jan. 9.

The Foresters, 2-4 in the Crossroads League, trailed 15-10 after the first quarter and 28-27 at halftime before taking a 43-42 lead in the third quarter. The Cougars had the final cheer, though, tossing in 16 points to the visitors’ 12 in the final frame to eke out the win.

Vikings dispatch East Noble, 60-52

The Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team dispatched visiting East Noble, 60-52, on Saturday, Jan. 9.

Five players tallied at least nine points for the Vikings, who sizzled the nets in the second half, sinking 11 of 14 field goal attempts for 78.6 percent. Senior Konner Platt and junior Hunter Hollowell highlighted the team’s offensive effort with 18 and 13 points, respectively. Hollowell helped fuel the scoring with eight assists.

Late surge pushes Foresters past MVNU

A late scoring spree by the Huntington University men’s basketball team propelled it to a 75-66 win over visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday, Jan. 9.

A free throw by the Cougars’ Josh Ashwill tied the game up for the ninth time, 66-66, with 2:21 remaining. It would be the final point Mount Vernon would score, however, as the Foresters tallied the game’s final nine points to surge ahead and earn the win, evening their Crossroads League record at 3-3.

EN pulls away from Lady Vikes in 4th to win

East Noble pulled away from the visiting Huntington North High School girls’ varsity basketball team in the fourth quarter, hanging the Lady Vikings with a 55-44 loss on Friday, Jan. 8.

The Northeast 8 Conference rivals entered the contest’s final frame deadlocked at 38. The Lady Knights broke the tie, scoring the first eight points of the quarter to take a 46-38 lead. Coach Heidi Lawson’s squad, shooting just 25.4 percent for the game on 16 of 63 marksmanship, couldn’t catch up and got hung with the loss, its second in NE8 play against one win.

Barton earns lone win for swimboys in 4-way meet

Cody Barton earned the lone win of the day for the Huntington North High School boys’ varsity swim team, which finished third at a four-way meet versus host Warsaw, Rochester and Tippecanoe Valley on Wednesday, Jan. 6.

Barton topped the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:08.50. The junior also tallied third-place points for the Vikings in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 1:01.80.

Palmer, Recker lead HU women over Grace

Miranda Palmer and Amelia Recker combined for 50 points to lead the Huntington University women’s basketball team over host Grace College, 76-63, on Wednesday, Jan. 6.

Palmer, a junior, scored 29 points while Recker, a senior, totaled 21 for the Foresters, winners of seven straight. The duo blitzed the Lancers at the free-throw line, where they shot a combined 17 for 18 for a sterling 94 percent.

Local youth second nationally in Punt, Pass and Kick competition

Wyatt Shearer, of Huntington, earned runner-up honors in the boys’ 6 to 7-year-old age division at the national finals of the National Football League’s Punt, Pass and Kick skills competition, held Sunday, Jan. 3, in Indianapolis.

Shearer, 7, punted 57 feet, 11 inches; passed 59 feet, five inches; and kicked 65 feet, two inches for a grand total of 182 feet, six inches, netting him second place in a field of four.

Lady Vike cagers almost double up on North Side

Madi Canady knocked down 24 points and the Huntington North High School girls' varsity basketball team nearly doubled up on host Fort Wayne North Side on Tuesday night, Jan. 5, with a 70-36 win.

Canady, a senior, banged in 7 of 8 from the free-throw line on the way to her big night, and she got double-figure scoring help from Hannah Stoffel with 12 points and Sarah Fryman with 10.

Grace guards push Lancers past Foresters

The starting guards of Grace College accounted for 47 points to lead the Lancers to an 80-70 win over the Huntington University men's basketball team on Tuesday, Jan. 5.

Brandon Vanderhegghen dropped in 27 points and his running mate, Logan Irwin, pumped in 20 points as Grace, 13-4, dropped the Foresters below the .500 mark on the season at 8-9. Grace held a 36-35 lead at halftime, but HU started the second half cold and the Lancers took control of the game at that point with 12 straight points.

The Huntington North High School girls’ basketball teams, pictured here wearing pink for a rally the team held to support Huntington County Cancer Services the day after Thanksgiving, invite winter sports teams from Huntington North and other area schools to help them with a fruit cup and granola bar food drive to be held Friday, Jan. 29, at 6 p.m. during the Lady Vikings’ games against DeKalb. Canned fruits, vegetables and monetary donations will also be accepted during the drive, which will benefit Blessings in a Backpack.

Youth V-ball to start work on Jan 10

The Viking Volleyball Club, a three-tier youth volleyball group held at Huntington North High School, is accepting participants in grades two through five to compete in its first two tiers, with training beginning on Jan. 10.

The club is run by Trinda Goings, Huntington North’s head volleyball coach. Participants in second and third grades will compete in the club’s Tier A while participants in fourth and fifth grades will compete in Tier B.
