HU soccermen top Grace

The Huntington University men’s soccer team topped Grace College, 2-1, on Saturday, Oct. 3, at King Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, senior Joey Newbery set up freshman Tyler George for his first collegiate goal in the 51st minute. Newbury then turned scorer himself, giving the Foresters a 2-0 advantage just under 20 minutes later. Though the Lancers managed to find the back of the net in the 84th minute, Coach Russ Lawson’s squad was able to hang on for the win and send its fans, watching the game as part of Huntington’s homecoming celebration, away happy.

Grace soccerwomen sink Foresters

A pair of goals in the opening half by host Grace College ended up sinking the Huntington University women’s soccer team, 2-0, on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The Lancers’ first goal came a little over 11 minutes into the game, courtesy of Mallory Rondeau. Grace struck again in the 28th minute, as Jordan Hairgrove planted a pass from Carianne Sobey in the back of the net to give her squad a two-goal cushion that would stick.

HU closes fall dual-meet season with loss to IWU

The Huntington University men's tennis team closed out its fall dual-meet season with a 1-8 loss to visiting Indiana Wesleyan University on Thursday, Oct. 1.

The No. 1 doubles team of Joseph Straznicky and Ignacio Poncio got the lone HU win on the day as the Foresters dropped to 4-8 on the season, 3-5 in Crossroads League play. Straznicky and Poncio defeated Gavin White and Leonard Matthews, 8-6.

Leo ends Lady Vike spikers' win string

Host Leo slowed the high-flying Huntington North High School varsity volleyball team with a 3-0 sweep on Thursday, Oct. 1.

Leo won the tight contest, 22-25, 20-25 and 22-25 to put the brakes to the Lady Vikings' nine-match win string. HNHS is now 20-6 on the season, 4-1 in the Northeast 8 Conference.

Allyson Mettler had 11 kills and Alexa Hill had 20 assists to pace the HNHS offense. Ariene Butler had 13 digs to lead the defense.

Almalahi, Sorg, Baldridge lead HNHS soccerboys to win

Sophomore Mohamed Almalahi scored another two goals and seniors Trey Sorg and Zach Baldridge each had a goal and an assist as the Huntington North High School boys' varsity soccer team downed visiting Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, 5-1, on Thursday, Oct. 1.

The Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the visitors in the first half and outscored them 2-1 in the second frame to impove to 12-2-2 on the season.

Senior Brendan Sharkey got the remaining HNHS goal, and fellow seniors Alex Hosler and Aaron Webb had additional assists.

MVNU uses late scores to down HU soccermen

A pair of late second half scores by visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene sunk the Huntington University men’s soccer team, 2-0, on Wednesday, Sept. 30.

After a scoreless first half and more of the same in the second, the Cougars found the back of the net in the 66th minute to take a 1-0 lead on the Foresters. Huntington remained in the game until minutes before its conclusion, when the visitors cushioned their lead with a score at the 86:33 mark to ice the win.

HU volleyball team comes up short against Goshen

The Huntington University volleyball team came up short in a five-set thriller with visiting Goshen College, losing 2-3 on Wednesday, Sept. 30.

The Maple Leafs struck first, winning the opening set, 25-15, but the Foresters countered with a 25-20 victory in the following frame to even things. Though Goshen went back in front with a 25-21 decision in the third set, Huntington won by that same score in the fourth to deadlock things once more. The visitors had the last cheer, however, edging the Foresters in the final frame, 15-11.

Viking netmen fall one win shy of advancing in sectional

The Huntington North High School boys’ tennis team fell one game shy of advancing to the Norwell Sectional semifinals as it lost a squeaker to Bellmont, 2-3, on Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Junior Nick May and sophomore Auden Eckert each won a singles match to give the Vikings a chance, but the Tigers’ Alex Alanis was able to outlast sophomore Matt Karst in the third singles contest to end Huntington North’s season at 6-10.

Karst lost 6-7, (5-7), 1-6.

HU men's bowling team fifth at Cardinal Classic

The Huntington University men's bowling team picked up three spots on Sunday to finish fifth out of nine teams at the Ball State Cardinal Classic over the weekend.

Lagging in eighth place after the first day of play, the Foresters picked off three teams on the final day to finish with 7,017 pins. Northern Ohio won the classic with 7,656 pins, followed by Wright State at 7,393, Clarke with 7,178 and Bowling Green with 7,088.

The HU men's team consisted of Jess Meyers, Adam Harris-Shoemaker, Seth Walker, James Knapp, Derek Beckler, Joe Miller and Daniel Miller.

HU women bowlers runner-up at opening tourney

The Huntington University women's bowling team opened up the 2015-16 season in a big way by placing second over the past weekend at the Ball State Cardinal Classic in Tier II.

The Forester women got the runner-up spot for the second straight year, with Wright State again being the one team to top them. Wright State defended its title with 7,185 pins, while HU knocked down 6,968.

Northern Ohio took third place with 6,684 pins, Bowling Green was fourth with a 6,510 pinfall, Clarke was fifth with 6,461 pins and Ball State was sixth with a total of 6,279.

5-minute lapse spells disaster for HU soccerwomen

A five-minute lapse spelled disaster for the Huntington University women’s soccer team in a 3-0 loss to host and 20th-ranked Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 29.

The Cougars, 8-3, found back netting three times in that disastrous five minutes to turn a 0-0 stalemate into a 3-0 lead that would stick, dropping HU to 6-5 on the season.

MVNU started the streak in the 54th minute and was wrapped up by the 58:12 mark compliments of three different Cougars.

Lady Vike spikers get to 20-win mark

Mackenzi Cannici had 10 kills and four blocks to lead the Huntington North High School varsity volleyball team to a 3-0 win over visiting New Haven on Tuesday, Sept. 29.

The Lady Vikings won 25-19, 25-15, 25-18 to improve their record to 20-5 on the season, 4-0 in the Northeast 8 Conference.

Alexa Hill provided the oil to the Lady Vikes' offensive engine with 20 assists on the night, and Kaylee Platt rallied the defensive troops with 17 digs.

The Lady Vikes' junior varsity won, 2-0, to improve to 16-6 on the season.

Scores were 25-6, 25-14.

Almalahi leads Viking booters past Norwell

Mohamed Almalahi scored a pair of goals and had a assist to lead the Huntington North High School boys' varsity soccer team to a 5-1 win over visiting Norwell on Monday, Sept. 28.

The Vikings, 11-2-2, turned a 1-1 halftime tie into a runway with four unanswered goals in the second half.

Almalahi, the Vikes' sophomore sensation, upped his team-leading goals to 24 for the season. Seniors Nathan Park and Zach Baldridge and sophomore Caleb Smith got the other scores for HNHS.

Sam Poling got two saves in net for the win.
