Viking booters top Peru

The Huntington North High School boys’ varsity soccer team dispatched visiting Peru, 5-3, on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

The Vikings enjoyed a 2-1 lead at halftime. Coach Steve Saddington’s squad then added three more goals in the second half while limiting the Tigers to two.

Huntington North, 8-1-2, got two goals from Mohamed Almalahi. The Vikings’ sophomore sensation has now scored 19 goals on the season, which leads the team.

Forester booters tie Spartans, 1-1

Two overtime periods weren’t enough for the Huntington University men’s soccer team and visiting Manchester University to settle their differences and the squads had to settle for a 1-1 tie on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Ola Ladapo put the Spartans, 1-3-2, in front with a goal in the 24th minute. The visitors’ slim lead persisted until the 63:10 mark, when Forester junior Isaac Wust scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season off a pass from sophomore Max Troyer to knot things up and force overtime.

Fast goals, solid goalkeeping stop HU women's soccer squad

A pair of fast goals and rock-solid goalkeeping lifted host Indiana Tech University over the Huntington University women’s soccer team, 2-0, on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

The Warriors’ Megan Perry found the back of the net a little over seven minutes into the game. Less than three minutes after that, the Tech senior struck gold again, taking a pass from Jessica Zurcher to give the hosts a two-goal advantage.

Lady Vike spikers ditch Homestead

The Huntington North High School varsity volleyball team dispatched visiting Homestead in straight sets on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Despite the match turning out to be a sweep, the Lady Spartans didn’t make things easy on the Lady Vikings. Coach Trinda Goings’ squad claimed wins of 25-17, 25-19 in the first two sets before facing its toughest challenge in the third frame, where it outlasted Homestead, 26-24, to earn its 15th win against five losses.

HU golfer Poole runner-up at Lancer Invitational

Abby Poole, a freshman on the Huntington University women’s golf team, shot an 80 to earn runner-up honors at Grace College’s Lancer Invitational, held at Stonehenge Golf Club on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

Poole’s outing landed her a spot on the all-tournament team and helped the Foresters finish fourth.

Hannah Lochner carded a 101 for Huntington. Sophie Frazier posted a 109 while Sara Scott fired a 121, capping the team’s score. Sarah Maloney withdrew before finishing the round.

HU spikers outlast Marian

The Huntington University volleyball team outlasted host Marian University, 3-1, on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

The Foresters kicked off the match with a 25-22 win, but the Knights responded with a 25-21 win of their own to even things. Huntington squeaked by Marian in the following set, 25-23, and rode that momentum to a 25-19 victory in the fourth frame to secure the win, its second against three losses.

HU athletes get Five Star accolade from NAIA

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced that Huntington University has been named a recipient of the Champions of Character Five Star Award for the 2014-15 school year.

This is the seventh consecutive year HU has earned the recognition.

One of 169 institutions, HU received the award based on a demonstrated commitment to Champions of Character and earned points in each of the following categories: character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion.

Leo overruns Viking netmen

The Huntington North High School boys' varsity tennis team was overrun by visiting Leo, 0-5, on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

The Vikings, 4-7, were completely blanked in two of the five matches and could win no more than three games in any match.

At first singles, Nick May was a 0-6, 0-6 loser to Eli Steiner. Auden Eckert at second singles fell to Isaac Steiner, 1-6, 2-6, and Matt Karst at third singles also took a double blank loss, to Eli Herran.

Homestead tops Lady Vikes' soccer squad

Visiting Homestead scored three times in the first half and wound up with a 4-1 win over the Huntington North High School girls' varsity soccer team on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

The Lady Spartans took a 3-1 lead into the half and wound up scoring an insurance tally in the second stanza as Huntington North fell to 6-4-1 on the season.

Freshman Amaya Sunderman tallied the lone HNHS goal, off an assist from Taylor Conley.

Hill puts name in Lady Vike spikers' record books in win over Northfield

Senior setter Alexa Hill became the career assist leader for the Huntington North High School varsity volleyball squad and helped carry the Lady Vikings past host Northfield, 3-0, on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

Hill put her name into the HNHS record books with assist number 2289 in the first set win. For the night she had 20 assists as HNHS won 25-17, 25-12, 25-17.

Hill also had a big night on the defensive end of the floor, leading the squad with 15 digs as the Lady Vikings improved to 14-5 on the season.

Zadeikis a bright spot as HU netmen lose to Goshen

Jokubas Zadeikis had a hand in both wins but not much else positive happened for the Huntington University men's tennis team as it lost to host Goshen College, 2-7, on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

Zadeikis, a freshman from Lithuania, beat Michael Oyer at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, and teamed with Joseph Straznicky at second doubles to defeat Luis Perez and Eric Zuercher, 8-6.

Daniel Strom at sixth singles pushed his Goshen foe, Eric Cender, to three sets before falling, 4-6, 6-4, 1-6.

4 shutout wins carry HU netwomen over Goshen

Four shutout wins carried the Huntington University women's tennis team to a 9-0 win over visiting Goshen College on Tuesday, Sept. 15, as the Foresters kept their unbeaten season rolling.

Improving to 6-0 on the year, HU got blank job wins from Constance Golz at first singles, Haley Kuppler at fourth singles, Alexis Allen at fifth singles and the first doubles team of Morgan Bemisderfer and Celine Rongos.

Bemisderfer at second singles and Rongos at third singles only lost one game in two sets, and the second doubles team of Golz and Kuppler dropped only two games.

Riverview's Whicker is champ at Indian Springs XC Invite

Wilson Whicker won the Indian Springs Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 12, helping the Riverview Middle School boys’ cross country team place 12 out of 24 teams.

Whicker’s winning time was 10:13. Nathan Sizemore also produced a top 10 finish for the Raiders, placing ninth.

The Riverview girls captured eighth out of 24 squads.

Addy Wiley, Lesley Zook and Anna Guerre finished sequentially for the Lady Raiders, placing 21st, 22nd and 23rd, respectively.

HU harriers 18th at Knight Invitational

The Huntington University men’s cross country team finished 18th out of 28 teams at the Calvin College Knight Invitational, held Saturday, Sept. 12.

The Foresters’ Tyler Herber, who is back with the team after sitting out last season with an injury, made his return in impressive fashion. The senior posted Huntington’s best finish on the day, clocking in at 26:19 to place 42nd out of 355 runners.

HU women harriers 12th at Knight Invite

The Huntington University women’s cross country team claimed 12th at the 25-team Calvin College Knight Invitational, held Saturday, Sept. 12.

Freshman Aspen Dirr paced the Foresters, crossing the finish line in 19:05 for 35th place. Hannah Moore clocked in at 19:32, good for 55th. Christine Sparks took 68th in 19:46, senior Krista Wood attained 99th in 20:24 and Huntington North product Marie Ditzler finished 107th in 20:37, capping the team’s score at 364.
