DeKalb rallies back for win against Lady Vike booters

Visiting DeKalb pulled off a second half comeback on the Huntington North High School girls’ varsity soccer team, flipping a two-goal deficit into a 4-3 win on Monday, Sept. 14.

The Lady Vikings, 6-3-1, got two goals from senior Hannah Williams and one from sophomore Hannah Tillett while limiting the Lady Barons to a single score to enjoy a 3-1 lead at halftime. The visitors came back with a vengeance in the second half, however, finding the back of the net three times to seize the lead from Coach Jeremy Steele’s squad, which was held scoreless.

Taylor slugs HU netmen

The Huntington University men’s tennis team managed only two wins against host Taylor University and fell, 2-7, on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Ignacio Poncio and Jokubas Zadeikis, at second and fifth singles, respectively, accounted for the Foresters’ wins. Poncio dispatched Stephen All, 6-2, 6-0, while Zadeikis topped Jacob Scott, 6-4, 6-2.

HU golfers seventh at 'Battle' at Blackthorn

The Huntington University men’s golf team took seventh at Bethel College’s Battle at Blackthorn, held at Blackthorn Golf Club in South Bend over Friday, Sept. 11, and Saturday, Sept. 12.

Kaleb Harness led the Foresters with a 156, which tied him for 24th out of 72 golfers. Cale Carr, Lance Hoch and Logan DeMaa each finished a stroke behind Harness to share the 29th spot and cap Huntington’s score at 627.

Zach Borntreger posted a non-scoring 173 for the Foresters.

HU women golfers 12th at 'Battle'

The Huntington University women’s golf team placed 12th at Bethel College’s Battle at Blackthorn, held at Blackthorn Golf Club in South Bend over Friday, Sept. 11, and Saturday, Sept. 12.

The Foresters’ Abby Poole finished tied for 18th out of 70 golfers with a score of 170. Hannah Lochner was next for Coach Pete Schownir’s squad, posting a 212. Sophie Frazier shot a 223 while Sara Scott carded a 242 to round out Huntington’s score at 847.

Sara Moloney was the non-scorer with a 248.

South Adams edges HNHS netboys

The Huntington North High School boys' varsity tennis team lost to host South Adams, 2-3, on Monday, Sept. 14.

Auden Eckert at second singles and the second doubles team of Dane Eherenman and Garrett Smith got the wins for HNHS, 4-6, on the season.

Eckert, a sophomore, topped David Muselman, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1). Eherenman and Smith, both juniors, beat Zach Teeple and Jamison Kistler, 6-1, 4-6 (6-3).

Viking No. 1 singles player Nick May lost to David Villarroel, 2-6, 3-6, and Matt Karst at third singles lost to Dexter Miller, 1-6, 1-6.

Viking booters fall to DeKalb in shootout

The Huntington North High School boys' varsity soccer team lost its first game of the season in a shootout to host DeKalb, 2-1, on Monday, Sept. 14.

The Vikings, 7-1-2, tied the game at 1-1 in the second half on a goal by Mohamed Almalahi after DeKalb had scored the only goal of the first half.

Sam Poling only gave up the one goal in regulation while making four saves.

Nathan Park got the assist on Almalahi's team-leading 17th goal of the season.

DeKalb, 10-1 on the season, got its goal in regulation from Joshua Good.

May's third highlights HN netboys' play at Warsaw Invite

Nick May, a junior on the Huntington North High School boys’ varsity tennis team, captured third place in the first singles section at the Warsaw Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 12.

May turned in the best performance of the day for the Vikings, who finished tied with Bishop Luers for fifth place in the eight-team field.

May kicked off the tourney with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Warsaw’s Justin Stout. Though the junior lost his next match, falling to Fishers’ Jon Hornett, 2-6, 2-6, he came back to beat Bishop Luers’ Cole Scheible, 6-2, 7-5, and earn bronze honors.

HU netwomen remain unbeaten by stopping Taylor

The Huntington University women’s tennis team stayed undefeated on the season with a 7-2 victory over visiting Taylor University on Saturday, Sept. 12.

With the win, the Foresters improve to 5-0. Coach Roger Ferguson’s squad enjoys a 3-0 mark in the Crossroads League, where it’s tied with Indiana Wesleyan University for the best record in the conference.

Personal-bests help Viking harriers to sixth at Wildcat Classic

With 12 of its 13 runners achieving personal-best times, the Huntington North High School boys' varsity cross country team placed sixth at the Wildcat Classic Cross Country Invitational at Indiana Wesleyan University on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Freshman Brock Spahr paced the Viking runners by placing 14th among team scorers in 16:24.7, helping HNHS score 220 points among the 19 teams in the race. Sophomore Hale Bowen was 41st in 17:02.6, frosh Jacob Wust was 50th in 17:31.4, soph Nolan Young was 55th in 17:44.7 and frosh Drew Davis completed the scoring by place 60th in 17:55.6

Lady Vike harriers capture Blackford Invite crown

Placing all five runners within the top 10 team scorers, the Huntington North High School girls' varsity cross country team claimed the Blackford Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Senior Hannah Stoffel led the way for HNHS with a fourth place overall finish and runner-up among team scoring runners in 20:09, but her teammates weren't very far away. Fellow senior Marissa Jamison took seventh in 20:28, sophomore Chloe Scheiber was eighth in 20:38, freshman Alena Miller was ninth in 20:45 and junior Cadee Harmon was 10th in 20:47.

Lady Vike golfers fourth at NE8 meet

The Huntington North High School girls’ varsity golf team captured fourth at the Northeast 8 Conference Tournament, held Saturday, Sept. 12, at Noble Hawk Golf Links, in Kendallville.

Senior Sarah Fryman placed 10th overall and was named second team all-conference with a score of 94. Sophomore Jaclyn Boyd carded a 95, good for 11th overall and honorable mention status, which junior Ashley Hall also attained after shooting a 96 and finishing 13th. Junior Leah Kitchen fired a 103 to cap the Lady Vikings’ score at 386.

Freshman Laura Ham posted a non-scoring 103.

Almalahi leads HNHS booters past South Side

Mohamed Almalahi scored two goals to lead the Huntington North High School boys’ varsity soccer team over host South Side, 3-0, on Saturday, Sept. 12.

The Vikings scored twice in the first half and once more in the second while shutting the Archers out to run their record to 7-0-2.

Almalahi, a sophomore, now has 16 goals on the season, which leads Huntington North.

Senior Zach Baldridge accounted for the Vikings’ other score. Senior Alex Hosler and junior Al Tirado each supplied an assist.

Sophomore keeper Sam Poling recorded his seventh shutout of the year.

Lady Vike booters wallop South Side, 9-2

The Huntington North High School girls’ varsity soccer team walloped host South Side, 9-2, on Saturday, Sept. 12.

The Lady Vikings, 6-2-1, got three goals and as many assists from sophomore Hannah Tillett, who now has 11 scores on the season. Offensively, Tillett takes a backseat only to sophomore Karmen Koch, who found the back of the net twice against the Lady Archers to raise her goal tally to 16.

Freshman Amaya Sunderman also scored twice while sophomores Taylor Conley and Sydney Kyle each scored once to round out Huntington North’s big day.

Pair of fast Cornerstone goals sink HU soccerwomen

Two fast goals ended up being enough for Cornerstone University as the Golden Eagles hung the Huntington University women’s soccer team with a 2-1 loss on Saturday, Sept. 12, at King Stadium.

The Foresters, 4-2, ceded both goals in the game’s first 12 minutes. Teigan Mitcham scored the first off an assist from Bria West just 2:29 into the contest. A little over nine minutes later, the visitors found the back of the net again as Josie Litty beat Forester keeper Toby Carman to give Cornerstone a 2-0 lead, which it took into the break.
