Announce state wrestling first round pairings

The Indiana State High School Athletic Association has announced pairings for the first round of the state tournament on Friday evening, Feb. 18.

Huntington North wrestlers Kyle Jolas, Colin Downey and Andrew Mason will be in action, which starts at 6 p.m. at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Jolas, a freshman, will take his 40-6 record to the mat against junior Jared Brooks of Warsaw, who is 27-1, at 112 pounds.

Downey, a senior, brings a 43-3 record to his 135-pound match against fellow senior Luis Acuna, of Portage, who is 24-4 on the season.

No. 4 Varsity Eagles lose to No. 2 Eastside

The state ranked No. 4 Huntington Varsity Eagles lost to the No. 2 Indianapolis Eastside Golden Eagles, 54-47, on Friday evening, Feb. 11.

Huntington started with a cold first half and worked hard to dig themselves out of a hole at halftime. They had a strong third quarter and brought the game back in the final period. With 6:05 left in the game the Golden Eagles led 40-30. The Eagles went on an 8-0 run, and with 3:30 to go they were only down by two points. But the fouls piled up and the Golden Eagles took the game at the charity stripe, draining eight consecutive free throws.

Viking bowlers punch ticket to state by winning semi-state crown

The Huntington North Viking bowling team won the Muncie semi-state Saturday afternoon, Feb. 12, and advanced to the Indiana High School Bowling State Finals at Cooper's Sport Bowl in Anderson Saturday, Feb. 19.

The third-ranked Vikings rolled through the semi-state and grabbed the top seed in the finals, then defeated sixth-ranked Fort Wayne Wayne in the championship match 408-363 for the title.

The Vikings totaled 3,266 during qualifying to grab the top seed.

Lady Viking bowlers claim semi-state crown; on to state finals

The Huntington North Lady Viking bowling team won the Muncie semi-state Saturday afternoon, Feb. 12, and advanced to the Indiana High School Bowling State Finals at Cooper's Sport Bowl in Anderson Saturday, Feb. 19.

The Lady Vikings defeated tournament top seed Homestead 319-271 in the championship match to win the semi-state title.

The Lady Vikings came back from seventh place after the first quali-fying game and qualified fourth to advance to the two-game Baker steplad-der finals of the semi-state, beating fifth place South Bend Clay by just 13 pins.

Sizing it up

IHSAA announces high school reclassifications for next 2 years

The Indiana High School Athletic Association has announced new school classifications for member schools for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 school years.

As part of the classification review, the IHSAA also announced new soccer classifications that will begin for the next school year. The classifications apply only to state tournaments, and not to regular season or conference competition.

Baker takes all-around title to lead Lady Vike gymnasts to second at Marion Invitational

Jessica Baker won one event and took the all-around title to lead the Huntington North High School gymnastics team to second place at the Marion Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 12.

Baker, a junior, tallied 36.950 to top the all-around leaderboard, narrowly defeating second place Tessa Lane of Columbus North, who scored a 36.775.

The Lady Vikings as a team tallied 105 points for the runner-up spot to Columbus North, which scored 107.600.
Northrop was third among the 10 teams with 104.275, Roncalli was fourth with 103.300 and Western placed fifth with 98.325.

Miller, Speed split 40 to lead HU past Goshen, 80-56

Sarah Miller and Pazia Speed evenly split 40 points to lead the Huntington University women's basketball team to an 80-56 win over visiting Goshen College on Saturday, Feb. 12.

Playing before their third annual Pink Out fund-raising crowd, the Foresters took a 33-25 lead at halftime and never looked back to improve their record to 16-10 overall and 8-6 in the Mid-Central Conference.

Featherston becomes sixth Eagles to join 1,000-point club

Huntington Eagles junior point guard Caleb Featherston recently reached the 1,000-point mark for his varsity career.

He hit the milestone on a jumper in the fourth quarter of a game against Clinton Christian on Jan. 21.

Featherston is currently averaging 18.4 points per game for the 19-8 Eagles, who are ranked fourth in the state among homeschool teams.

He is the sixth Eagle to reach the milestone.

 

Senior Downey leads three Vikings to state wrestling tourney

Led by senior Colin Downey, three Huntington North High School wrestlers will be on the mats at the IHSAA State Wrestling Tournament in Indianapolis on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18-19.

Downey finished third at 135 pounds at the Woodlan Semi-State Wrestling Tournament in Fort Wayne on Saturday, Feb. 12, to punch his ticket to state, and he will be joined by freshman Kyle Jolas at 112 pounds and junior Andrew Mason at 285 pounds, both of whom got the fourth and last qualifying spots in their respective weight classes.

First-half struggles doom Lady Vikings in sectional against South Side

The Huntington North High School girls' basketball team dug itself a big first half hole with poor shooting and turnovers and wound up losing to Fort Wayne South Side, 73-56, in the Marion Sectional Basketball Tournament on Friday, Feb. 11.

The Lady Vikings hit just 5 of 19 field goal attempts in the opening half on the way to falling into a 30-17 halftime hole. They came back in the second half to blaze the nets for a season high half of 15 of 21, 71.4 percent, but the Lady Archers went them a bit better at 11 of 15, 73.3 percent, to easily hold on for the win.
