HNHS gymnasts win three events on way to wins over Homestead, Heritage

The Huntington North High School varsity gymnastics team grabbed first-place finishes in three of four events and placed six others in top four slots to total 102.9 points and win a three-way meet between the Lady Vikings, Homestead and Heritage on Thursday, Feb. 10.

Lauren Bradburn led a four-person sweep in the vault with a score of 9.15, Stephanie Freeman was first on the uneven bars with an 8.95 and Jessica Baker took the balance beam with a 9.40.

Crestview wrestlers get first win of season

The Crestview Middle School wrestling team took its first win of the season by defeating St. Vincent, 40-33, on Thursday, Feb. 10.

Winners by pin for Crestview, now 1-2, were Noah Kitt, Gunnar Wibel, Tony Frantz, Alex Hughes, Corbin Clarke and Layne Emery.

Mark Hultz was a winner by major decision, 12-4. Zach Lavine won in a 5-2 decision, and Joe Bentz won in an 8-1 decision.

In exhibition, winners by pin were Wibel, Hultz, Frantz, Alyssa Schuller and Katie Leeper.

 

Lady Eagles rally to defeat FW Hurricanes

The Huntington Lady Eagles varsity homeschool basketball team defeated the Fort Wayne Hurricanes 37-31 on Tuesday, Feb. 8.

Huntington, 21-4, struggled in the first half, as the Hurricanes more than doubled the Eagles' score in each quarter. The Lady Eagles hit just 1 of 12 attempts from the field in the first quarter alone. Huntington slightly improved in the second period, but the team found itself down at halftime, 19-9.

Miller's 2 FTs push HU women past Bethel

Sarah Miller hit two free throws with eight seconds left to push the Huntington University women's basketball team past host Bethel, 61-60, on Wednesday, Feb. 9.

Bethel's Sarah Clark hit a basket with 22 seconds left to put the Pilots up 60-59, but Heather Seyfred fouled Miller with eight seconds left, and the junior nailed both charity tosses to push the Foresters to 15-10 on the season.

Bethel had controlled the entire first half, getting as much as eight points ahead of HU, before Huntington cut the lead to four to end the first half down 33-29.

YMCA offering intramural v-ball for MS kids

Parkview Huntington YMCA will be offering seven weeks of intramural league volleyball for grades fifth through eighth grade.

Teams will consist of eight to 10 players. Practices will be held on Mondays or Tuesdays, 5 to 6 p.m. or 6 to 7 p.m., starting Feb. 21.

Games will be played every Saturday, March 5 through April 30. There will be no practices or games during spring break.
There is a cost for the league, with a discount for members.

Registration is required and can be made at the front desk or online at www.huntingtony.org.

Introductory volleyball course for elementary girls to be held at Parkview Family YMCA

Elementary-aged girls in grades three through five are invited to register for an introductory volleyball course, starting Feb. 22.

The seven-week course teaches the game of volleyball. In addition, girls will be taught competitive drills, individual workouts, camp games for skill development and game strategies.

Practice will be held at the YMCA on Tuesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m., starting Feb. 22.

There will be no practice over spring break.

Huntington University volleyball player Melissa Grossman will be the course instructor.

Delphi edges HNHS in first round at team wrestling regional

It all came down to the final match, but Delphi High School trumped the Huntington North High School varsity wrestling team, 32-28, in the first round of the Logansport Team Wrestling Regional on Tuesday, Feb. 8.

Going into the final weight class, 152 pounds, Huntington North was just a tick behind Delphi, 29-28, with the 152 match to determine which team advanced. However, Huntington's Alex Robinson was overcome by Delphi's Jacob Brummett, 9-3, to secure the win for Delphi.

Baker, team set marks as HNHS gymnasts top Northrop

Two school records were broken during the Huntington North High School varsity gymnastics team's 105.6-101.45 defeat of host Northrop High School on Tuesday, Feb. 8.

Jessica Baker set a new school record on the uneven bars with a score of 9.5. The team as a whole, now 4-0, also set a new record with its high score of 105.6.

Hot-shooting Vikings shock high-flying Wildkats, 60-56

Three Vikings hit double-digit point totals as the Huntington North High School boys' varsity basketball team upset high-flying Kokomo High School, 60-56, on Friday, Feb. 4.

The Vikings hit 19 of 36 shots for 52.8 percent from the field, including 10 of 19 from behind the arc, to surprise the Wildkats, who fell to 14-2 on the season.

The Vikings, above .500 at 9-8, also hit 12 of 14 free throws for 85.7 percent.

Crestview captures eighth grade boys’ county hoop tourney

The Crestview Middle School’s boys’ eighth grade basketball team was crowned Huntington County champions after defeating Riverview on Monday, Feb. 7.

Caleb Landrum banged in 25 points as the Crestview Middle School eighth grade team defeated their Riverview Middle School counterparts, 52-38, to win the Huntington County Middle School Boys' Basketball Tournament on Monday, Feb. 7.
Jordan Seabolt contributed nine points for Crestview while Adam Woods had six.

Crestview ends its season with a 17-5 record.

Chase Asher led Riverview with nine points. Austin Lange and Cody Adams each scored six.

Riverview dropped to a 5-15 record.
