Openings remain for HU cheer squad clinic on Feb. 5 at Merillat

Openings remain in the Huntington University cheerleading squad's cheer clinic, to be held on Feb. 5 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Merillat Complex on the university's campus.

The clinic is designed for girls between the ages of 5 and 14.

Later that afternoon during halftime of the Huntington University men's basketball game, the clinic attendees will perform the cheer they learned that morning.

There is a cost per person.

Shively jumper gives HU men's basketball team overtime win over Marian

Tyler Shively hit a jumper with nine seconds left in overtime to give the Huntington University men's basketball team a 73-71 win over host Marian University.

After the two teams battled to a 64-64 tie in regulation, the score was knotted for the seventh time at 71-71 when Shively hit a pair of free throws with 1:14 left in the extra frame. Marian's Brandon Malone missed a jumper with 43 seconds left and Caleb Kennedy grabbed the rebound to give the ball back to HU, which called a timeout with 35 seconds left.

Marian uses balanced attack to beat HU women's hoop squad

Sarah Miller led all scorers with 25 points but visiting Marian used a balanced scoring attack to knock down the Huntington University women's basketball team, 70-60, on Saturday, Jan. 22.

In a battle for third place in the Mid-Central Conference, Marian had four players score in double figures and a fifth added nine points to send the Foresters to their ninth loss of the season against 12 wins, and fifth loss in the conference against four wins.

Viking gymnasts place seventh at Carter Classic

Junior Jessica Baker placed seventh in the all-around competiton to lead the Huntington North High School gymnastics teams to seventh place at the Carter Classic on Saturday, Jan. 22, at Concordia in Fort Wayne.

The Lady Vikings tallied 98.9 points for their placing. Valparaiso won the 10-team meet with 112.975 points, followed by Bishop Dwenger in second with 110.975, Carroll in third with 103.100 and Northrop in fourth with 102.500.

Baker, Lady Trojans too much for Lady Vikes in 67-56 loss

Courtney Baker and visiting New Castle were too much for the Huntington North High School girls' basketball team as the Lady Vikings fell 67-56 on Saturday, Jan. 22.

Baker knocked in 27 points for the contest and New Castle ran out to a 41-20 halftime lead that was too much mountain for the Lady Vikings to climb in the second half as HNHS fell to 8-8 on the season.

Kayla Schenkel and Liesl Davenport led the HNHS efforts with 16 and 13 points, respectively.

Salamonie girls squeak out wins over Indian Springs

The Salamonie School girls' basketball teams both picked up close wins over Indian Springs on Wednesday, Jan. 19.

The eighth grade girls squeaked out an 18-17 win, while the Salamonie seventh-graders won 23-21.

Alex Hardin led the Rebel eighth-graders with nine points. Danielle Kem added five points.

The team improved to 3-9 on the season.

Madi Canady pumped in 16 points to carry the Salamonie seventh-graders.

The seventh-graders are now 4-8 on the season.

 

Riverview seventh grade girls basketball team ovetimes Southwood

The Riverview girls' seventh grade basketball team beat host Southwood, 24-20, in overtime on Tuesday, Jan. 18, to earn RMS a split on the night.

The eighth grade Raider girls lost to their Southwood foes, 44-17.

The RMS seventh-graders were led in victory by Hannah Stoffel with 11 points and Sarah Fryman with 10 points.

The Riverview seventh-graders are now 10-3 on the season.

The RMS eighth-graders were led by Maddi Kennedy with six points and Kelsy Mygrant with four points.

The eighth-graders are now 3-10 on the season.

 

Riverview boys' basketball teams bow to Wabash

Both Riverview boys' basketball teams got beaten by host Wabash on Thursday, Jan. 20.

The RMS eighth-graders lost 38-33 to drop their record to 3-13 on the season.

Derek Snyder and Austin O'Connell led the Riverview efforts with eight points each.

The RMS seventh-graders fell 30-25 to drop to 4-10 on the season.

Kory Goodrich was high scorer for Riverview with 10 points.

 

Huntington Eagles sweep Clinton Christian Couriers in basketball, Friday, Jan. 21

The Huntington Eagles hosted the Clinton Christian Couriers on Friday evening, Jan. 21, at Salamonie School and came up with the win, 61-55.

In a contest of fundamentals, Clinton started hot taking an 11-point lead into the first quarter break. The Eagles, however, took advantage of a two-quarter Courier slump and built a 10-point lead at the end of the third quarter.

In the final quarter, the Eagles led by as much as 20 with five minutes to go, but the Couriers didn't give up and kept the Eagles on their toes to the end.
