HNHS girls' basketball team shakes off dismal first half, drops Northrop

The Huntington North High School girls' basketball team shook off a dismal first half to beat visiting Fort Wayne Northrop, 41-30, on Thursday, Jan. 20.

The Lady Vikings scored 30 of their 40 points in the final two frames to climb back above .500 at 8-7 on the season. After hitting just 3 of 23 shots from the field for 13 percent in the first half, the Lady Vikings went 9 of 17 in the second half to help themselves get the win.

HU women’s hoop team to host ‘Pink Out’ Feb. 12 against Goshen

The Huntington University women's basketball team will host a "Pink Out" Saturday, Feb. 12, at 1 p.m. at the University's Merillat Physical Education and Recreation Complex.

The event will honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors during halftime of the Huntington University versus Goshen College women's basketball game.

"Pink Out" is a nationwide initiative of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics sponsored by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association to support breast cancer research and awareness programs.

Depth hurts Lady Viking swimmers

Despite winning seven of 12 events, the Huntington North High School girls' swim team suffered from a lack of depth and lost to host South Adams High School 102-84 on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Huntington North only managed four second-place finishes and five third-place finishes in addition to its wins.

Andrea Okuly and Cassie Hacker each won two events to lead the Lady Vikings. Okuly took the 200-yard individual medley in 2:32.70 and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:07.54. Hacker got the gold in the 50-yard freestyle in :27.14 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:15.40.

Lloyd leads Eagles' rout of Hawks

Trevor Lloyd had 12 points to lead the Huntington Eagles varsity homeschool basketball team as it routed the Fort Wayne Hawks 63-25 on Monday, Jan. 17.

The Eagles, now 14-7, hit double-digit scoring every quarter, while letting Fort Wayne score no more than eight in any one stanza. Huntington built a 30-11 lead by the half.

Trey Frank supported Lloyd with 10 points. Caleb Featherston had nine points and eight rebounds, and Elliot Flamion had 11 rebounds.

Andrew Rexroth led the Hawks with 12 points.

 

Eagles 14U falls to Hawks

The Huntington Eagles 14U homeschool basketball team fell to the Fort Wayne Hawks, 50-27, on Monday, Jan. 17.

Despite the score being tied 7-7 after the first quarter, Fort Wayne jumped ahead in the second to take a four-point lead, 19-15, by halftime.

Huntington managed to stay within reach of Fort Wayne in the third, but the Hawks exploded on a 25-9 run in the final quarter to seal the win.

Joel Neff led Huntington, now 2-7, with eight points. Bruce Hitzfield added seven points and nine rebounds.

 

Crestview seventh grade boys down McCulloch

The Crestview boys' seventh grade basketball team edged Marion McCulloch on Monday, Jan. 18, 39-34, to improve to 9-6 on the season.

Konner Platt led the Cougars with 16 points.

Luke Stroud added nine points, Jamison Kline chipped in seven points and Trevor Holloway had five points.

The Crestview boys' eighth grade team fell to Marion McCulloch, 50-39, to drop to 14-4 on the season.

Jordan Seabolt led the Cougars with 20 points.

Caleb Landrum chipped in nine points, and Adam Woods added six points and eight rebounds.

 

Zook wins twice as HNHS boys' swim team falls

Phillip Zook had two of three Huntington North High School wins as the Viking boys' swim team lost to host South Adams 128-55 on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Zook won the 100-yard freestyle in :55.16 and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.40.

Zach Leffler won diving with 187.60 points.

The Vikings also had five second-place finishes. Taylor Mortorff reeled in the silver in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke. Luke Doughty took second in diving with 181.5 points.

Foresters' big comeback bid falls short against USF

After being down by as many as 19 points, the Huntington University men's basketball team got within one but was held off and wound up losing to visiting University of Saint Francis, 85-83, on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Huntington, now 15-6, 4-4 in conference, initially controlled the scoreboard for the first 15 minutes of the game, getting as much as an eight-point-gap, but St. Francis wouldn't have it as the 12th-ranked Cougars, 17-5, 6-2 in conference, commenced a six-minute, 16-6 run to gain the lead at the 4:26 mark. USF kept HU at bay to close the half up by one at 33-32.

Big Salamonie rally falls short against Crestview eighth grade boys

Despite a 22-point fourth-quarter comeback, the Salamonie School eighth grade boys' basketball team fell to Crestview Middle School 42-38 on Monday, Jan. 17.

Walker Spahr scored a game-high 20 points for the Rebels, while Austin Eltzroth added seven and Jacen Johnson scored five.

For Crestview, now 14-3, Caleb Landrum notched 17 points, and Jordan Seabolt and Parker Brundige each contributed six.

Crestview's seventh grade boys' basketball team, however, fell to Salamonie 37-31.

Lady Eagles second at Indy Shootout

The Huntington Lady Eagles varsity homeschool basketball team won its first two games but lost the championship match to finish second at the Indy Shootout on Friday, Jan. 14.

Huntington, now 16-4, lost to the Butlerville Lady Wolves (Ohio) 48-42 in the championship match, despite a third-quarter rally by the Lady Eagles.

Huntington found itself down 25-22 at halftime, but went on to outscore Butlerville 16-8 in the third quarter to grab the lead. However, Butlerville responded by smacking the Lady Eagles with a 15-4 run in the fourth quarter to take the win.

Eagles go 1-2 at Midwest Christian match play

The Huntington Eagles varsity homeschool basketball team went 1-2 during the Midwest Christian Homeschool Basketball Alliance Match Play in Lansing, MI, on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 14-15.

The Eagles' win was against the Crestwood Calvary, 43-37, in its second game of the invitational.

The Eagles, now 13-7, kept a foot in front of Crestwood to take a 24-17 advantage at halftime. Although Calvary attempted to come back in the third quarter, the Eagles revitalized in the fourth for the win.
