Viking matmen go 4-1 at Bishop Luers Invitational

Five Viking wrestlers went undefeated on the day as the Huntington North High School wrestling team went 4-1 at the Bishop Luers Invitational.

The Vikings recorded wins over the host school, Maconaquah, Broad Ripple and Whitko, but got clipped by Lawrence Central 31-25.

Leading the charge with 5-0 marks on the day were Kyle Jolas at 112 pounds, Sebastian Eckert at 130, Colin Downey at 140, Lukas Wygant at 171 and Alex Evans at 189.

Eckert had four pins and a forfeit win in his five victories, while Jolas had three pins, a decision and a forfeit in his five wins.

Eighth-ranked Warriors topple 19th-ranked Eagles in homeschool hoop tilt

The 19th ranked Varsity Eagles fell to the eighth-ranked St. Johns Warriors for Christ of Michigan, 78-67, on Friday, Dec. 10.

Caleb Featherston led the Eagles, 7-3, with 33 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Trey Frank added 14 points and seven rebounds, and Samuel Daniels chipped in 10 points, four rebounds, three blocks, three steals and three assists.

Lady Eagles 14U defeats Lady Rams Friday

The 14 and under Lady Eagles homeschool basketball team defeated visiting Huntington Catholic on Friday, Dec. 10, 33-17, at Salamonie Gym in Warren.

The Lady Eagles were led by Marissa Brown with 21 points. Erin Sickafoose chipped in six points.

The Lady Rams were led by Corinne Zay, Emily Klepper and Madison Jennings, who each had four points.

The 12 and under Lady Eagles lost to the fifth and sixth grade Lady Rams, 18-10.

Kelli Brown and Suzanne Sickafoose led the Lady Eagles with four points apiece.

Minton leads Crestview girls' basketball team over Southern Wells

Monica Minton scored 10 points and had six rebounds to lead the Crestview Middle School eighth grade girls' basketball team to a 25-19 win over Southern Wells on Thursday, Dec. 9.

Aly Grabner had 13 rebounds for the Cougars. Corinne Tester and Morgan Butler each added five points.

The eighth-graders are now 8-1 on the season.

The Cougar seventh-graders also beat Southern Wells, 25-18.

Hannah Williams led the Crestview offense with 11 points. Marissa Jamison scored seven and Alexa Hill had five.

Riverview boys fall twice to McCulloch

The Riverview Middle School eighth grade girls' basketball team was overpowered by host McCulloch, 42-31, on Thursday, Dec. 9.

Tasha Grover led Riverview with 12 points. Maddi Kennedy had 10 and Kristen Dyson scored six.

Riverview's record fell to 2-5.

The seventh grade Raiders fared no better, losing to McCulloch 59-25.

Hannah Stoffel recorded eight points, Sarah Fryman had seven and Carly Jaggers scored six for RMS, now 4-3.

Both teams will play Canterbury Middle School on Wednesday, Dec. 15, at 5 p.m.

 

Riverview boys fall twice to McCulloch

McCulloch proved overwhelming for the Riverview Middle School eighth grade boys' basketball teams as the Raiders lost, 55-35, on Thursday, Dec. 9.

Derek Snyder with 16 points was the leading scorer for Riverview, now 1-8.

Riverview's seventh grade boys' basketball team also fell to McCulloch, 46-36.

Martin Webb took charge for the Raiders with 11 points. Keenan McKinzie scored eight.

The seventh-graders dropped to 2-5 on the season.

Both teams will visit Salamonie School on Monday, Dec. 13, at 6 p.m.

 

Crestview girls double dip Salamonie

The Crestview Middle School eighth grade girls' basketball team defeated Salamonie 34-30 on Wednesday, Dec. 8.

Monica Minton led Crestview with 13 points. Corinne Tester had seven points and five steals, and Katie Oswalt had six points and five rebounds. Aly Grabner added six points.

For Salamonie, Katie Littleford hit double digits with 11 points. Danielle Kem scored eight.

Crestview improved to 7-1 on the season.

Crestview's seventh grade girls' basketball team edged Salamonie 13-12.

Landrum scores 20 to lead Crestview eighth grade boys past Riverview

Caleb Landrum scored 20 points for the Crestview Middle School eighth grade boys' basketball team as it defeated Riverview 33-27 on Tuesday, Dec. 7.

Jordan Seabolt supported the Cougar offense with six points.

For Riverview, now 1-7, Chase Asher scored five points.

In seventh grade action, Riverview fell to Crestview 41-33.
Logan Green scored eight points for the 2-4 Raiders.
Konner Platt led Crestview, also 2-4, with 12 points. Isaac Gerber and Jamison Kline each had six, and Preston Husband scored five.

Salamonie eighth grade girls top HC for first win

The Salamonie School eighth grade girls' basketball team earned is first win of the season by defeating Huntington Catholic School 23-20 on Tuesday, Dec. 7.

Katie Littleford scored 11 points for Salamonie, now 1-7. Alexis Hardin and Danielle Kern added six points apiece.

Huntington Catholic's Corinne Zay led all scorers with 12 points. Stephanie Miller had four points and Emily Klepper had two. Olivia Woolard recorded four rebounds and four assists.

 

IU-SB hands Forester women third loss of season

Dominant 3-point shooting, nine steals and a big advantage in rebounding propelled visiting Indiana University - South Bend over the Huntington University women's basketball team, 51-38, on Wednesday, Dec. 8.

Although IU-SB hit only 18 of 46 shots from the field, it did connect on 7 of 16 three-point attempts for 43.8 percent, while HU, now 7-3, could hit just 12 of 42 attempts from the field for 29.6 percent, with 7 of 23 three-pointers. The Titans also grabbed 39 rebounds, including 13 offensive, to Huntington's 25.

Paul, Reeder among 18 on hoop HOF’s Silver Anniversary Team

Two former Huntington North High School players are among the 18 men named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame's Silver Anniversary Team.

Gary Paul and Brian Reeder were selected for the team on the basis of their accomplishments as high school seniors 25 years ago. Paul played college ball at the University of Indianapolis and now lives in Muncie, where he works as a State Farm Insurance agent. Reeder, who went on to play at Hanover College, is a Huntington resident and is employed by Good Humor-Breyers.

One second place best Viking boys can do in pool against Warsaw

Only one member of the Huntington North High School boys' swim team was able to break into a second-place spot, the Vikings' highest placement of the day, as host Warsaw crushed HNHS 144-36 on Tuesday, Dec. 7.

Phillip Zook, a junior, took the silver in the 100-yard backstroke.

Taking third place finishes for HNHS were Luke Doughty in the 50-yard freestyle, Zook in the 100-yard freestyle, Taylor Mortorff in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Mortorff, Doughty, David Acra and Zook.
