Murphy to challenge Burton in Republican primary

Indiana Rep. Mike Murphy, of Indianapolis, announced Thursday, May 28, that he will be a candidate in the Republican primary for Indiana's Fifth Congressional District.

That seat is currently held by fellow Republican Dan Burton, also of Indianapolis, who has served since 1983.

The district includes all of Tipton, Grant, Miami, Wabash, Huntington, Hamilton, and Hancock Counties, as well as parts of Marion, Shelby, Howard and Johnson counties. Huntington County has been a part of the Fifth District since the 2000 census.

Murphy made his announcement at an empty Getrag transmission plant in Tipton.

Murphy has represented the 90th District in the Indiana House of Representatives since 1994. He is currently the ranking minority member of the House Technology, Research and Development Committee. He also serves on the Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee and the Insurance Committee. He is a former member of the Ways and Means, Public Policy, Rules, Labor, Education, Agriculture and Families and Children committees.

Murphy graduated from the University of Notre Dame and is working on his master's degree in American history at Indiana University, Indianapolis. He is chairman of the board of directors of Monarch Beverage, Inc., a beverage distribution company, and E&F Transit, a trucking company affiliated with Monarch. He has two sons, ages 24 and 20.
