Leadership academy students complete projects

The 2009 Huntington County Leadership Academy students recently completed their projects.

The 15 students were divided in to three groups of five and were given the assignment of creating, planning and finishing a project in a five-month window - from January to May.

The group consisting of Troy Hostetler, Ryan Douglas, Doug Selig, Chris Nothhard and Steve Pozezanac picked the project of making signs for the Forks of the Wabash River Greenway Trail.

The 48 signs provide information regarding rules, safety, distances and starting and fin-ishing markers. The signs were completed with help of the Historic Forks of the Wabash, Huntington County Highway Department and Huntington Parks and Recreation Department.

The group consisting of Gary Randle, Kelly Lyons, Kelly Renier, Monique Miller and Josh Miller picked the project of implementing a service-learning project as a requirement to graduate from Huntington North High School.

The adoption of this policy by the Huntington County Community School Corporation would require senior students to complete six hours of volunteer service to the community either as a class activity, solely on their own or a combination of a class activity and the students doing volunteer activities on their own.
This will be a requirement for all students in Huntington County starting with seniors graduating in the spring of 2010.

The group consisting of Michael Rohler, Ed Farris, Cambria Menendez, Heather Bradin, and Amanda Van Rosendale picked the project of creating a pamphlet about the Earned Income Tax Credit program.

The group collaborated with Pathfinder Services Inc. to also implement free tax preparation for individuals who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit beginning with the 2010 tax season.

The tax preparation will be available on select afternoons, evenings and weekends in 2010. Appointments will be required. Volunteers are also needed to provide the free tax preparations.

Those interested should contact Beth Stevens at Pathfinder Services.

The booklet, which contains the qualifications of the Earned Income Tax Credit, was dis-tributed to agencies in the county.

The project is a requirement of graduation from the Huntington County Leadership Academy.
Sponsors of the 2009 academy were Duke Energy, graduation sponsor; David Culp & Co., breakfast sponsor; and United REMC Operation Round-up Trust Fund, book sponsor.
