The community of Warren will pay special tribute to its veterans and current service members during this summer's Salamonie Summer Festival.

The theme of the festival, which will be held July 2-5, is "Let Freedom Ring: A Salute to Our Heroes." Veterans, service members and family members of deployed military personnel are invited to sign a banner bearing that theme, which will be on display during the festival.

The banner was taken to Heritage Pointe on June 1 for signatures. Until the festival starts, the banner will be available for signatures at Denny's Hardware in downtown Warren. During the festival, the banner will hang with a display of military memorabilia.

Items are now being collected for the military exhibit. The exhibit will be staffed and all memorabilia on display will be supervised. Anyone with items to contribute to the exhibit is asked to call Jill Eltzroth at 260-917-0213.

All veterans are invited to ride in the Salamonie Summer Festival Parade, to be held on July 3. Veterans should sign up in advance by calling Eltzroth.

Veterans riding in the parade will meet at the Markle Medical Office parking lot on Fri-day, July 3, at 5:30 p.m.

Events during the festival include a rodeo, demolition derby and a co-ed softball tourna-ment. Tickets are now available for the rodeo and demolition derby, team registrations are now being accepted for the softball tournament.

The 10th annual rodeo will be held Saturday, July 4, and the demolition derby is set for Sunday, July 5.
Discounted combination admission tickets for both events may be purchased in advance through July 3 at National City Bank, MarkleBank, DeWeese Soft Water, Warren Service and Supply and Citizens Telephone, all in Warren. Each combination ticket purchase includes one entry into a 50/50 drawing to be held during the demoli-tion derby.

The co-ed softball tournament will be held Saturday, July 4, at Tower Park in Warren. Teams must register by June 19 and the tournament is limited to the first 10 teams to register. The first and second place teams will receive cash awards.

To register for the tournament, call Christy McCarver at 375-2780 or e-mail her at c.mccarver30@yahoo.com.

The Samuel Jones Pioneer Breakfast will serve as the kick-off to the Salamonie Summer Festival on Thursday, July 2, at 7:30 a.m. A fireworks show at Tower Park is planned for dusk that same day.

A parade and tractor pull are scheduled for Friday, July 3.

In addition to the rodeo and softball tournament, other events on Saturday, July 4, will include basketball, volleyball, basket bingo, SAM Olympics, a pedal tractor pull, fishing derby and a frog jumping contest.
The final day of the festival, Sunday, July 5, begins with a community worship service and continues with a road rally, waterball fights and car and bike cruise-in, with the demolition derby serving as the final event.
