This year's Huntington Heritage Days has some new events to offer during the opening weekend.

The annual festival officially gets under way on Thursday, June 18, at 5 p.m., when Mid America Shows Delaware opens its carnival rides and games for the first time in downtown Huntington.

The carnival will be set up on Warren Street, between East Park Drive and Court Street, and will continue through Sunday, June 21.

Events new to the festival this year include a Band Booster Breakfast, a run at Victory Noll and a reading awareness event at Huntington Municipal Airport.

The Heritage Days Band Booster Breakfast will be held on Saturday, June 20, from 7 to 11 a.m. Tickets are available at the door or from a band member.

The breakfast will be held at the Masonic Temple dining room, located at 400 E. Franklin St., and will consist of all-you-can-eat pancakes plus sausages, egg casserole and a bever-age. It will be served by the Huntington North High School band members and supporters. The money will go toward the band's new uniforms.

The Victory Noll 5K Run/1K Fun Walk steps off at 10 a.m. This event is sponsored by the Victory Noll Center Women's Auxiliary. The course is set up on the campus of Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sisters' motherhouse, Victory Noll. Donations will be accepted for the run or walk. Light refreshments will be available for purchase.
Later in the afternoon, from 3 to 7 p.m., Huntington Municipal Airport will host "Roaring Into Reading." This event is sponsored by Reading Awareness of Huntington County and the airport.

Some automobiles being featured include a Viper, steam car, excavating equipment, a monster truck, farming equipment and both a state trooper's car and a sheriff's car. Also featured will be a Bookworm story time, Discovery Toys and a free book raffle.

Additional events are planned through the festival's end on June 28, but anyone who wants to participate in those events needs to sign up soon.

Registration for this year's first "Huntington Has Talent" music talent show is due June 18. The event will be held Sunday, June 28, downtown. Categories are ages 5-12, 13-18, adult and group.

Pre-registration is required. Forms can be picked up at the Huntington County Chamber of Commerce, located at 305 Warren St. The Chamber is also collecting the applications. For more information, call 356-5300.
