Three juniors emerge as REMC scholarship contest winners

Three high school juniors emerged as the winners of this year's Youth Scholarship Con-test sponsored by United REMC.

Placing first in the judging was Brittany Blazier, a student at Norwell High School. A repeat winner from last year, Alyssa Hollowell, took second place. And placing third was Lauren Chanley. Both Hollowell and Chanley attend Huntington North High School.

Blazier is a member of the National Honor Society, is a member of the Norwell Show Choir, girls' dance captain, a member of the Golden Knights, and is involved in Norwell Campus Life. Last summer she was a self-employed tutor for five students. She attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Award camp in April and was part of the State 4-H Chorus. She was a 2008 Elk's State essay winner and in 2005, she was the Richard Lugar/Indiana Farm Bureau Youth Essay Contest state winner. Blazier was also a three-time winner of the Optimist International Club essay contest.

Blazier is the daughter of Joseph and Brenda Blazier, rural Ossian.

Hollowell has been a member of Class Council for two years and served as president for one year. She has been involved in cheerleading for three years, the Spring Musical for two years, Viking band, and advanced concert band and freshman mentor. She's been involved in Youth for Christ-Students Leaders, 4-H and is active in the Emmanuel Community Church Youth Group. She was selected to attend a Student Leadership Conference at HNHS and is a Hoosier Girls State delegate. She has been on the All "A" Honor Roll and is in the Top 25 for the Class of 1010.

Hollowell is the daughter of Scott and Wendi Hollowell, Roanoke.

Chanley has been a Student Leader and active in Campus Life for six years, is involved in 4-H and is a Humane Shelter volunteer. She ranks fourteenth out of her class of 442, and has been in the Top 25 of her graduating class for three years. She has played freshmen basketball, freshmen and junior varsity volleyball, and junior varsity and varsity softball. Chanley has been a Student Athletic Board member for two years, and served two years as a Student Ambassador for the Stay in Bounds Program. She also earned the Scholar Athlete Award in basketball, volleyball and softball.

Chanley is the daughter of Scott and Maria Chanley of rural Huntington.

The essay topic this year centered on renewable forms of energy.

The three winners were recognized at the co-op's annual meeting June 13.

First-place winners receive a $1,000 scholarship, while second and third-place winners each receive $500.
Students can enter multiple years, receiving $1,000 maximum.

More than two dozen students submitted entries.
