Old German School to hold autumn open house on Oct. 23

The Old German School, located at 3995N-1000W on the Huntington-Wabash county line, will hold an autumn open house on Sunday, Oct. 23, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Visitors will have the opportunity to view exhibits depicting life in the German settlement, as well as a great deal of history of the St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church which was founded in 1851.

The cemetery nearby is the resting place for the first settlers. Many gravestones are lettered in German, including the epitaphs. The cemetery was recently restored and graves are easily located.

The German School was constructed by the St. Paul's congregation in 1887 for the purpose of providing an education for area youth as well as instruction on the Bible in the German language.

After many years of use as a storage building the schoolhouse has been restored and is available for public use.

Cider and doughnuts will be served and the public is invited to attend.
