H.E.L.P. Inc awards 10 scholarships to locals

Ten Huntington County students have been awarded $1,500 scholarships from H.E.L.P. Inc. for Disabled Citizens.

Colin McIntire and Abby Niederman each received the John Decker Memorial Scholarship in memory of board member John Decker.

This scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in post-high school studies who has a qualifying disability.

McIntire, son of Joe and Denise McIntire, is a freshman at Ball State University majoring in computer science. Among his extra-curricular activities, he participates on an award-winning wheelchair soccer team.

Niederman, daughter of John and Judy Niederman, is a senior at Manchester College and is majoring in English literature. Her long-term goal is to become an advocacy lawyer for disability rights.

Nicole Shaw was awarded the first Jane Nes Memorial Scholarship in memory of board member and caseworker Jane Nes. This scholarship is awarded to a nursing student who intends to become a registered nurse.
She is the daughter of Susan Denman and Todd Shaw, and is a senior at the University of St. Francis.

Shaw plans to continue her education with a master's degree with the goal of becoming a nurse practitioner.

Seven general H.E.L.P. scholarships were awarded to Stephanie Gray, Stacy Jena, Lacey Reed, Hilary Rorhabaugh, Amanda Satchwill, Rick Scheer and Katlin Smart.

This scholarship is awarded to students who are working toward degrees in special health care fields.

Gray, daughter of Steve and Cindy Gray, is a senior at Ball State University and is majoring in speech pathology. Her goal is to become a speech pathologist working either in a school with children or in a hospital with all ages.

Jena, daughter of Jeanette Jena, is a senor at Illinois University majoring in special education: vision impairments. She plans to do graduate work in rehabilitation teaching and orientation and mobility.

Reed, daughter of Tina Reed and Robert Reed, is a junior at Ball State University where she will earn a Bachelor of Science in nursing. She plans to work at the V.A. Hospital in Indianapolis in the area of mental health.
Rohrabaugh, daughter of Todd and Jody Rohrabaugh, is a senior at Ball State University with a major in psychology. She plans on studying clinical psychology in graduate school.

Satchwill, daughter of Jim and Lori Satchwill, is a senior at Indiana University/Purdue University in Indianapolis and is in pre-occupational therapy. She hopes to work in a pediatric therapy office.

Scheer, son of Robert and Paula Garrett, is in his fourth year at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He plans to return to Huntington to treat individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer or neurological diseases.

Smart, daughter of David and Lisa Smart, is a junior at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis and is studying to become a registered nurse. She hopes to work in pediatric with disabilities.

A scholarship banquet was held in May to honor these students and their parents.
