Lauralee Farrer, an artist in residence at Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, CA, will visit Huntington University in January to film the final segment of the movie "Praying the Hours."
Farrer will be assisted by 10 students in HU's digital media arts program.
The film's director says she was already attracted to the idea of filming at a Christian college, and decided to come to HU after the site was suggested by Matt Webb, a producer on the film and a 1998 HU graduate.
"Praying the Hours" focuses on a dying man who is reflecting on eternity. It is based on the ritual of fixed-hour prayer as observed by Abrahamic religions.
In addition to the segment of the movie to be filmed at HU, Farrer plans to shoot seven more segments around the country during 2012, with a target release date in 2013.
Dr. Lance Clark, professor of digital media arts, film and communication at HU, says improvements to his department, including the recent purchase of a state-of-the-art camera, has made the program more attractive to outside film agencies.
The camera was purchased with a donation by an unidentified member of the Huntington University Board of Trustees.
"It's a great opportunity for our students to learn the workflow of this camera because this is what they will encounter in Hollywood and while working on independent films," Clark says.
The camera can be used with the department's existing equipment. Clark plans to seek other donations to purchase more equipment for the unit as well as two other cameras for the department.
Clark hopes to have the camera ready for use by January.
