A project to change the numbers on exits and mileposts along I-69 in central and northern Indiana will begin in August, the Indiana Department of Transportation has announced.
The new numbers will reflect an extension of I-69 from Indianapolis to Evansville.
A 65-mile section between Evansville and the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center is scheduled to open late this year, with a 27-mile section from Crane to Bloomington set to open in 2014.
Beginning in August, existing milepost and exit numbers will increase by 200, INDOT says. For example, exit 0 will become exit 200; exit 10 becomes exit 210; etc.
Exit signs and signs one mile before exit ramps will display both the new and old exit numbers for at least three years.
After that time, damaged signs will be replaced with signs bearing only the new numbers. All old numbers will be removed by Oct. 1, 2017.
Existing milemarkers will be replaced with signs reflecting only the new numbers.
Limited lane closures may occur as new milemarkers and exit numbers are posted.
