Story Time sessions to begin at pair of libraries
Thursday, September 6, 2012 7:30 AM
Story Time sessions will begin this month at the Huntington City-Township Public Library's facilities in Huntington and Markle.
Weekly sessions for children from birth to 7 years are offered at the Huntington library on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, beginning Sept. 11 and 12.
Sessions at the Markle library are open to children ages 2 through 7 and are held on Thursdays, beginning Sept. 13.
Registrations are now being accepted at both libraries.
Story Time introduces children's literature, provides a group experience and encourages listening skills.
Children learn pre-reading skills such as narrative skills, phonological awareness, letter knowledge, print awareness, vocabulary and print motivation.
Sessions also introduce many of the concepts on Indiana's list of academic standards for preschoolers, including word recognition, fluency, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, literacy response and analysis, listening and speaking.
The programs incorporate picture books, rhymes, flannel board stories, finger plays, songs and puppets. Stories, songs and activities follow weekly themes.
There is no charge, but advance registration is required. To register for the Huntington sessions, call the Huntington library at 356-2900. To register for the Markle sessions, call the Markle library at 758-3332.
