House GOP Internship Program taking apps

State Rep. Dan Leonard (R-Huntington) announces that the 2013 House Republican Internship Program is now accepting applications. The program is open to college students and graduates and is recommended to those who would like to gain professional experience as well as learn more about the legislative process.

"For any student interested in state government and how the legislative process works, this is truly the best opportunity in the state," Leonard says. "The knowledge and the networking opportunities interns are able to take away from this experience is outstanding."

Applicants from all academic majors are accepted. Interns will be compensated with a $700 bi-weekly stipend and are eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 Verizon scholarship. The scholarship can be applied toward educational expenses for the student's current or future undergraduate or graduate studies.

The internship will be for the entire 2013 legislative session, which begins in January and ends in April. It is a full-time internship, Monday through Friday at the Statehouse, located in Indianapolis.

Individuals interested in the internship program may consider four different concentrations when applying: member services, media, computer/technology and policy/fiscal. For a detailed description of each concentration and additional information concerning the internship program, visit www.in.gov/legislative/house_republicans, select the "Student Opportunities" tab at the top of the page, then select "Internships."

The Indiana House Republicans will accept applications for the internship program until Oct. 31. Applications are currently being accepted at the website.

Interviews will be conducted as applications are received. Applicants are encouraged to work with their school in order to obtain academic credit for the internship - most colleges and universities in Indiana offer class credit.

"Interns play a very vital role in what we do during the legislative session," Leonard says. "They work directly with the legislators and staff on a daily basis, and it's an experience you can't find anywhere else in Indiana."
