Groups team up to encourage more recycling
Monday, October 1, 2012 8:48 AM
In an effort to help encourage residents to clean up and recycle household waste tires, refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers and air conditioners, the Huntington Landfill and Huntington County Solid Waste Management District will be working together to offer all residents of Huntington County an opportunity to recycle tires and Freon-containing items free of charge.
This fall, collection has been expanded to one month (including two Saturday collections) to make it more convenient for residents to participate. In the past, collection only lasted for a two-week period. In 2011, the first year this event was held, approximately 500 residents dropped off more than 2,000 waste tires and 100 Freon appliances for recycling at the landfill.
Beginning Monday, Oct. 1, and running through Wednesday, Oct. 31, up to six passenger car and truck tires and two Freon items per residence will be accepted for recycling at no charge at the Huntington Landfill. All Huntington County households are eligible to participate.
Any materials beyond the first six tires and two Freon items will be subject to recycling fees.
All commercial, dealer, semi-truck, farm and tractor tires will be subject to the regular tire fee schedule and will not be accepted for free during the collection event.
Tire and Freon recycling dates and times are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Oct. 1-31. Additional hours are on two Saturdays, Oct. 6 and 20, from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
The landfill is located at 515S-300W, Huntington.
