HU Theatre Dept. hosting summer camp

The Huntington University Theatre Department is hosting the 2013 Summer Theatre Youth Camp.

This year's summer show will be "Disney's Alice in Wonderland Jr."

Roles are plentiful, both for boys and girls, including three Cheshire cats and dozens of other characters.

"Disney's Alice in Wonderland Jr." is a fast-paced stage adaptation, featuring updated dialogue and new arrangements of such classic Disney songs as "I'm Late," "The Un-birthday Song" and "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah."

Children and youth entering grades 1-12 next fall are eligible to register for the camp.

The camp will begin June 24 and run through July 12.

Campers will meet 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Camp will not meet on July 4.

At the end of the session, campers will present two performances of the musical at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on July 13.

During their time at camp, campers will learn acting, singing and dancing skills. Children also are learning valuable skills, developing language and communication abilities, creativity, social awareness, a positive self-concept and empathy as well as gaining an understanding of the art of theater.

Joni Killian and Courtney Swenson will be camp directors for the 2013 summer session.

Prior to 2012, Killian directed the concert choir of the Children's Choirs of Huntington County for many years. She currently coaches soloists for Huntington North High School's choral program and teaches voice in the HU Music Department.

Swenson is a 2011 HU theater alum. She has served twice as a camp mentor and is currently living and working in Chicago as an actress.

"I am thrilled to have both Joni and Courtney take the lead this year," said Jay Duffer, assistant professor of theatre and former camp director. "Their combined skill and enthusiasm for music and theatre will create a wonderful experience for the campers."
