Business of the month

The Huntington County Chamber of Commerce has selected McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home as its Business of the Month for April. Holding the banner are (from left) Morris Hart, former owner and currently a funeral director; Gloria Hart; Christi Scher; owner and funeral director Michael McElhaney; and Barb Young, all on the funeral home staff; and Chamber Ambassadors Terry Miller and Sue Rumple. Also pictured are (back row, from left) Chamber Ambassador Nicole Johnson and Chamber Executive Director Steve Kimmel. The business was founded in Bippus in 1870 as M.B. Stultz Furniture and Undertaking. It was moved to downtown Huntington in 1872 and was purchased by the W.R. Briggs family in 1930. The funeral home moved to its current location, the 1895-era Taylor-Zent home at 715 N. Jefferson St. in Huntington, in about 1939. It was purchased by Edward Merckx in the mid-1950s. Hart became a partner in 1974 and purchased the business in 1978. McElhaney joined the staff in 1999 and bought the business in 2002.
