Pathfinder Community Connections honored the 26 volunteers who participated in its free tax preparation program during an appreciation dinner on April 22 in the Habecker Dining Commons on the Huntington University campus.
The volunteers donated 1,170 hours to prepare 1,051 tax returns for 296 families free of charge, said Beth Stevens, family self sufficiency coordinator for Pathfinder Community Connections. The families received refunds totaling more than $1.5 million, including $529,977 in earned income tax credits.
At the dinner, Angela and Casey Morgan received an award as the Dynamic Duo, Aleksandra Spasic was honored as International Superstar, Joanna Brenneman was named Most Valuable Preparer and Bill Horoho was recognized as the Highest Achiever.
Other volunteer tax preparers were John Aleman, Ryan Austin, David Barlow, Jessica Beaty, Karla Borror, Dwight Brautigam, Megan Dean, Molly Edgel, David Geders, Linda Holmes, Erica Isenberg, Tyler Karst, Brian Kirschbaum, Kyle Miller, Brittany Rooze, Scott Stevens and Jan Yost.
Four members of a Huntington University social work class taught by Carla MacDonald also volunteered.
Funding for the program was provided by United Way of Huntington County, NeighborWorks America and rural LISC.
