Scheiber scholarships go to four HNHS seniors

The Huntington County Community Foundation announces that Erica Carroll, Marie Ditzler, Onna Doering and Olivia Ely have been awarded 2013 Donald E. and Lou Rayne Scheiber Catholic Education scholarships.

Each recipient is a graduating senior at Huntington North High School.

Carroll plans to attend the University of Saint Francis, majoring in nursing.

She is the daughter of Rose and Brian Carroll, of Warren.

At HN, Carroll was a freshmen mentor and council member, as well as a math tutor. She attended Hoosier Girls State and volunteers at Parkview Huntington Hospital and, through 4-H, at Heritage Pointe.

Ditzler will be attending Huntington University, majoring in nursing.

She is the daughter of Gina and Jim Ditzler, of Huntington.

A National Honor Society member, she was a four-year member of the HN cross country and track teams, a member of the Student Athletic Board and an algebra tutor.

Ditzler has volunteered at the Huntington Library, Open Door, Salvation Army and Midnight Madness and also has donated 10 inches of her hair on three occasions to "Locks of Love."

Doering will be attending Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, majoring in biomedical engineering and Spanish.

She is the daughter of Robin Doering, of Huntington, and Rick Doering, of Huntington.

At HN, Doering was a National Honor Society member, freshman mentor and an algebra tutor while participating in cheerleading, swimming and as a thrower in track and field.

She has volunteered with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Helping Paws, Huntington Parks and Recreation Department and SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Ely will be attending Saint Mary's College majoring in nursing.

She is the daughter of Michelle and Dennis Ely, of Roanoke.

Her HN involvement included National Honor Society, class council, freshmen mentoring, tutoring, yearbook and Art Club.

Ely has volunteered at Lutheran Hospital, Sunday school and a rehabilitation hospital and organized a toy drive for children in Lutheran Hospital.

The Scheiber Huntington Catholic School Fund, which was created in 1997 by Donald E. and Lou Rayne Scheiber, was modified in 2012 to include scholarships for Huntington County students who are members of one of the county's three Catholic parishes, St. Mary, St. Joseph and SS. Peter and Paul.
