HCCF hands out George & Garnet Bergman scholarships

The Huntington County Community Foundation announces that Elizabeth Blinn, Shelby Bradford, Colin McIntire, Catherine Moriarity, Landon Poulson, Jeremy Rice, Kelsi Shaw, Nicole Smith, Rebecca Smith and Mariah Zumbrun have been awarded 2013 George & Garnet Bergman Scholarships.

Blinn, a 2012 graduate of Huntington North, currently attends Purdue University majoring in agribusiness management, with the goal of working in agricultural accounting.

She is the daughter of Kathy and Brad Blinn, of Warren.

At Purdue Blinn is a member of the Agribusiness Club and Collegiate FFA, participated in the Ag Economics Quiz Bowl and was honored as a Top 7 Ag Economics Freshman.

Bradford, a 2012 graduate from Huntington North, is a sophomore at IUPUI majoring in nursing with plans to become a perioperative nurse.

She is the daughter of Marilyn and William Bradford, of Warren.

Her collegiate activities have included Army ROTC, 20/20 Campus Outreach, the Best Buddies program, intramural soccer and working security at Indianapolis Colts games. Bradford has volunteered with the Invasive Plant Removal project and at the Wheeler Mission Center for Women and Children.

McIntire, a 2011 graduate of Huntington North, is a junior at Ball State University majoring in computer science.

He is the son of Denise and Joe McIntire, of Warren.

Outside the classroom McIntire plays power soccer for the Ball State club team and plans to try out for the United States national team.

He has been on the dean's list each semester and his career goals are to become a computer programmer.

Moriarity, a graduating senior from Huntington North, will be attending Purdue University majoring in genetics with the long-term goal of becoming a geneticist.

She is the daughter of Janet and Daniel Moriarity, of Warren.

A National Honor Society member, Moriarity was involved Varsity Singers, Freshmen Mentoring and Art Club.

Her volunteer work included the Bread of Life food pantry and First Baptist Church of Warren.

Poulson, a 2012 graduate from Huntington North, currently attends Manchester University majoring in pharmacy with plans to earn a Doctorate of Pharmacy.

He is the son of Marsha and Donald Poulson, of Warren.
At Manchester Poulson is a member of the American Chemistry Society, the Tri Beta Biology Society and the Pre-Pharmacy Club.

He was recognized with an Academic Achievement Award, volunteers as a chemistry tutor and collected food for a North Manchester food pantry.

Rice, a 2012 graduate senior from Huntington North, currently attends Indiana Tech majoring in criminal justice with a career goal of working in law enforcement.

He is the son of Jill and Steven Rice, of Warren.

Shaw, a 2012 graduate from Huntington North, is a sophomore at Huntington University majoring in nursing with plans to become a neonatal nurse.

She is the daughter of Sheri and Michael Yoder, of Warren.

Her volunteer work includes teaching a youth Bible study and the Equip Group youth ministry through the Warren Church of Christ.

Nicole Smith, a 2012 graduate from Huntington North, currently attends Indiana Wesleyan University majoring in accounting and finance with a minor in business administration and plans to become a CPA.

She is the daughter of Melinda and Kevin Smith, of Warren.

At Indiana Wesleyan Smith is on the dean's list and runs cross country and track.

Rebecca Smith, a graduating senior from Huntington North, will be attending Purdue University majoring in animal science/pre-vet.

She is the daughter of Krystal and Jon Smith, of Warren.

Her school activities include FFA, Freshmen Mentoring, math tutoring and variety show, as well as softball and volleyball. Smith's volunteer interests include the Mt. Etna Youth Group, FFA and 4-H.

Zumbrun, a graduating senior from Huntington North, will be attending Grace College majoring in elementary education/special education.

She is the daughter of Teresa and Melvin Zumbrun, of Warren.

A National Honor Society member, her high school career included playing tennis, volleyball and basketball. She was awarded a Scholastics Art Silver Key in a regional competition that included 50 counties.

Her volunteer experience included Bible School and a soup kitchen.

The George & Garnet Bergman Scholarship was established in memory of the couple who called Warren home.

Mr. Bergman continued the tradition of operating the Bergman Funeral Home that had been in the family for 100 years.

The scholarship is for students from Huntington North, Southern Wells or Eastbrook high schools.
