Free Diabetic Clinic fund-raiser on Saturday

Gems & Jams 2013, a fund-raiser for the Free Diabetic Clinic, in Huntington, will be held on Saturday, June 15, at Heritage Hall, Hier's Park.

The event begins with an auction and meal at 2 p.m. Bands, including Joni Killian & Co., will perform beginning at 6 p.m.

Meal tickets are available in advance at Barlow's Appliances & More and at Huntington Nursery & Florist.
Tickets will also be available at the door the day of the event, beginning at 1 p.m.

Those who attend just the session with the bands are asked to make a donation.

For more information or to donate items for the auction, call 468-0768.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Free Diabetic Clinic, which operates as part of the Huntington County Free Clinic at Trinity United Methodist Church.

The Free Diabetic Clinic treats more than 100 people with diabetes in a year, says Rosemary Wagner, director of the Huntington County Free Clinic. Ten to 15 people whose diabetes is uncontrolled are monitored during monthly sessions conducted by a nurse practitioner, she says.

The clinic provides diabetics with insulin and other supplies at no charge, Wagner says. While the insulin and some supplies are provided free of charge by pharmaceutical companies, the local clinic must fund other expenses such as the cost of lab tests.

The Free Diabetic Clinic is open to Huntington County residents who meet income guidelines and have no insurance.
