New name, leadership for Andrews festival

The community festival in Andrews will have a new name and new leadership this summer.

The Andrews Summer Festival will be held Aug. 16 and 17 under the leadership of the Andrews Town Council.

"It's going to be more family and kid oriented," says Ray Tackett, a town council member who is also helping to organize the festival, previously known as Andrews Western Days.

A schedule for the festival will be available in mid-July, Tackett says.

Organizers are currently seeking participants for several festival events, including a horseshoe tournament, a marketplace and the parade.

The horseshoe tournament will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17. Competition will be held in three age categories: 4 through 9, 10 through 69 and 70-plus. There is no entry fee, and cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places in each age group.

To enter the horseshoe tournament, call Gary Brown at 356-8477.

The marketplace will be held on both Friday and Saturday. There is no booth fee, and participants can bring whatever they want to sell.

To register for the marketplace, call Wayne Spencer at 519-2250.

The Andrews Lions Club will again sponsor the festival parade, which will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17, at 10 a.m. Cash prizes will be awarded for the first, second and third place parade entries.

To take part in the parade, call Othel Fouts at 786-3221.

The festival will also offer food vendors, a dunk tank, mini circus, kids' ride and events, a DJ Friday evening at the Andrews Park, a Saturday evening concert at the park and a free ice cream social after the parade at the Free Will Baptist Church.
