School corporation to replace three school buses

The Huntington County School Corporation will receive three new Thomas Built fuses this winter, after the board of trustees approved their purchase on Monday night, July 15.

Assistant Superintendent of Business and Classified Staff Jon Bennett reported that each bus will be purchased for a price of $88,183.43 and three old buses will be traded in at a value of $6,500 each.

Also, the building East Park Drive in Huntington that previously housed the Instructional Service Center, and prior to that the Huntington Public library, is now open for bid. Bennett reported that ads have been placed in local newspapers, and a full bid packet may be found at the corporation's website.

In other business:

• Superintendent Tracey Shafer reported that 10 General Education Diplomas (GED) were awarded in the previous month.

• Six new teachers were hired. They are Anna Davis, German, at Huntington North High School; Matthew Furthmiller, math, Huntington North High School; Jessica Jones, math, Huntington North High School; Megan Piper, third grade, Flint Springs; Kristina Sordelet-Hans, third grade, northwest; Stefni Stutzman, social studies, Huntington North High School.

• A new textbook was approved for the expository writing and advanced placement Spanish courses offered at the high school.

• Bennett reported a cash balance of $2.6 million in the General Fund, $787,284 in the Capital Projects Fund, and $2 million in the Transportation Fund.

• An updated Digital Curriculum Policy was approved, which states that students who rent an iPad from the corporation may not have the option to purchase it at the end of the school year.

The next meeting of the school board will be held on Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. at Horace Mann Educational Center, located at 2485 Waterworks Rd., Huntington.
