Pathfinder Services broke ground on three new Supported Independent Living homes on Wednesday, July 17.

The homes will be located at 1761 Ash Street in Huntington and will allow Pathfinder Community Supports to serve 12 individuals once the project is complete.

Each home will be approximately 2,000 square feet in size and provide a separate entrance and studio bedroom area for four individuals.

Staff support will be provided as needed. The new homes are made possible through a grant from Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis Affordable Housing Program through 1st Source Bank, a member bank of FHLBI. Additional funding is from NeighborWorks America.

Each tenant will have a separate bedroom suite that includes a bedroom area, small living area and private bathroom.

The tenants in each house will share a common living area, kitchen, laundry room and porch/patio space. The homes will be a single family, one story accessible ranch style to accommodate tenants' existing disabilities and those likely to develop as the tenants age in place.

"The homes have been designed specifically to provide an individual living space for individuals with developmental disabilities that we serve while allowing them to choose whether to use the supported common space to meet the needs," says John Niederman, president of Pathfinder Services, "These three homes are scheduled to open in 2014 and will provide fully accessible housing for 12 of the individuals we serve through our organization.

"We are extremely excited about this opportunity to provide a unique space that fosters independence while providing on-site support to enable our clients the greatest freedom as they age in place. We are very appreciative for the support from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis, 1st Source Bank, NeighborWorks America and our community partners."
