87 volunteers remove 4 tons of trash from river in clean-up event

The Wabash River Heritage Corridor Commission and the City of Huntington announces that 87 volunteers that participated in the "De-Trash the Wabash" project held on Saturday, July 27.

The volunteers were formed into teams and each team cleaned a one-mile section of the Little River and the Wabash River from downtown Huntington to the Wabash County Line.

They removed a total of 8,260 pounds of trash from the river and the riverbanks, including 79 car tires, 12 semi tires and 1 tractor tire.

The Awakening Church acted as a staging area for the volunteer teams and prepared and served lunch to the crews.

The Huntington Police Department provided a safety lesson and the Army Corp of Engineers provided water safety training prior to the teams heading out to the river.

Our Sunday Visitor participated by providing first aid kits to all the teams of volunteers.

The project was assisted by Halsen Products for providing discounted pricing on gloves for the teams and Stine Printing for discounting the price of T-Shirts for all the volunteers. Henline Towing Service assisted with the removal of large items and Zahm Greenhouse provided the use of two boats for volunteer teams to use on the water.

The event will be held again in 2014, with the projected date being Aug. 2.
