The Huntington County 4-H Robotics Team brought home the championship trophy from their first competition of the year.

Team THRUST 1501 from Huntington compiled a record of nine wins, one loss and one tie to capture the 2009 championship title at the CAGE Match held Saturday, Oct. 17, at Southport High School in Indianapolis.

This is the second year the event has been staged by the Southport Cybercards and Warren Digital Goats, robotics teams from two Indianapolis high schools. It's designed as a low-key event for rookies to become familiar with the robotics competition and get acquainted with other teams from throughout the state.

Team THRUST competed with Skyhawk, last season's robot. That robot was retired after the CAGE Match so that the team can begin working on its new season.

"It was a rough start as the field computer did not function," says Chris Elston, one of the team's mentors. "But once we overcame that issue, we were able to begin our fall rookie competition. We ended up winning the event with two other alliance teams."

The local team was in an alliance with the Digital Goats from Walker Career Center at Warren High School, Indianapolis, and Pulse Robotics from North White High School in Monon. The competition included 18 teams from Indiana and one from Kentucky.
