Thursday, February 6, 2014 8:12 AM
The American Legion Auxiliary units of Huntington County are seeking applicants for the 2014 session of Hoosier Girls State.
An informational meeting for interested students and their parents will be held on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m. at the Robert Mayne American Legion post, 1122 N. Main St., Roanoke. Delegates and alternates will be selected.
Eligible students must be in the upper third of the junior class. Home schooled students are also eligible.
Hoosier Girls State will be held June 22 to 28 at Trine University, in Angola. Participants will learn how government works by taking on roles in mock cities, political parties and as candidates for office.
The American Legion Auxiliary units will pay the non-refundable application and participation fees. Parents are responsible for transporting the students to and from Trine University.
Local participants are sponsored by Unit 7 and Donald E. Converse Unit 85, in Huntington, and Robert Mayne Unit 160, in Roanoke.
Interested students who are unable to attend the Feb. 9 meeting should contact Cynthia Sailors, of Unit 7, at 356-1370; Dylett Boyer, of Unit 85, at 224-1809; or Bev Swaim, of Unit 160, at 760-6667.
