Huntington County Commissioner Leon Hurlburt has announced that he plans to seek a second term in that office.

Hurlburt has filed for the Republican nomination in the first commissioners' district. He has an opponent in the Republican primary, Rob Miller.

"I believe the core foundation of government is to represent the people's views and be their voice in county government," Hurlburt says. "I am against big government and any new taxes.

"I will continue to promote and push economic development for a better quality of life for our citizens. I will continue to facilitate ways to reinvent how our government works and will promote changes that will save tax dollars.

"I have a deep and genuine desire to make a difference in our community."

During the three years he has been in office, Hurlburt notes, the county has seen more than $100 million in business investment, resulting in the creation of more than 550 new jobs and the retention of more than 3,000 existing jobs. New and expanding businesses have included Gerdau, Helena Chemical, Isolatek and CSP.

Also during his term, city and county emergency dispatch operations were combined, resulting in improved efficiency along with cost savings. In addition, he says, the rescue function of public safety was integrated into all seven county fire departments.

Hurlburt cites his lengthy involvement with the Huntington County Learning Center, a collaborative project of Huntington County, Huntington County Community Schools, Chamber of Commerce, Ivy Tech, Work One and private industry. The center will offer job training to both adults and youth.

He has also been involved with the Northeast Regional Partnership, a 10-county effort to bring high-paying jobs to the area.

Hurlburt's re-election committee is co-chaired by Dave Daugherty and Midge Decker, with Bob Straight and Becky Gerhart serving as co-treasurers.
