Zanesville council says yes to road repairs

The Zanesville Town Council voted to spend up to $73,000 on road repairs during its meeting on Thursday, June 19.

By a vote of 2-1, council accepted a proposal from Brooks Construction Company, Inc. According to the proposal, Brooks will mill and repave portions of Indianapolis Road and Wayne Street, as well as clean and tack the existing asphalt pavement.

The section of Indianapolis Road to be addressed is from the bridge north of town to the southern limits of County Line Road, while the stretch of Wayne Street to receive attention extends from the southern limits of County Line Road to Indianapolis Road.

Also, patching will be performed on Stoneybrook Drive and in the Smuts addition.

Council President Patsy Brock and Councilman Danny Miller voted in favor of the proposal, which will be paid for using $59,000 in CEDIT money and $14,000 from the town's sale of its sewer system to Fort Wayne in 2008.

Vice President John Schuhmacher voted against the proposal. Schuhmacher contended that the structures of the roads in question were sound and that the town could get by with them for a few more years.

Additionally, Schuhmacher championed the purchase of a new car for the police department and that cause now takes a hit as a result of the road repairs being greenlit.

"I wanted to make sure we had enough (funds) to do other projects, too," he explains.
