Arts Initiative announces hydrant theme

Huntington Arts Initiative Inc. founders Debbie Dyer, Rich Najuch and Ann Siegfried announce the theme of this year's fire hydrant public art painting project will be "Book Look ... and Listen."

Artists are invited to choose well-known books and paint their hydrants to represent the specific work of literature. On the opening day of the exhibit, readers will be posted at each hydrant sharing excerpts from the book. In addition, one copy of each book portrayed on the hydrants will be given away in a random drawing.

This is the fifth year the Arts Initiative has sponsored the project. Previous themes include "Dogs Days of Summer," "Down(town) By The Sea," "A Is For Alphabet" and "Lights, Camera, Action."

Opening day of "Book Look ... and Listen" is planned for Sept. 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. in downtown Huntington. Maps showing the locations of all the hydrants will be available at The New Huntington Theatre.

Anyone interested in painting a hydrant, sponsoring the event or reading one of the books can contact Dyer at 356-8874 or Siegfried at 356-6951. Dyer may also be reached by email at: ddyer@la fontaineartscouncil.org
