Back-to-school clothing trade set for Saturday

Crossroad Connections will hold its second Back to School events on Saturday, Aug. 9, at Hier's Park.

The day will start off with the Kidz Clothes Trade from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Family Living Building. Parents can trade their outgrown children's clothing for the other lightly used clothing. Sizes infant to adult small are offered while quantities last, but not all sizes are guaranteed.

"We had 92 kids last year," says Valerie Fields, director of Crossroad Connections. "We'll double this year, I'm sure."

The "Back 2 School Blast" will then run from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Heritage Hall. Free carnival like games will be played with basic schools supplies and hygiene items given as prizes.

"It's just a way to help those who are going through a tight time to relieve them of that stress," Fields says. "We're not going to be able to take care of every need, but we'll at least be able to make a dent to where it's not so financially stressful for the parent."

During the "Blast" a car show hosted by the Busted Knuckles Auto Club will take place on the grounds. Line up and registration begins at 2:30 p.m. at the front entrance of the park. There is a registration fee for cars, bikes and trucks. Food vendors will be present with goodies available for purchase and a free family concert by "Classic Voice" will be on the stage.

"There will be your regular hot dogs, tenderloins, funnel cakes and walking tacos," Fields said. "And Jimmy Pops Pizza will be there."

There will also be booths available with groups that specialize in giving children and adults a way to help themselves, Fields says.

"Our main goal is to be able to reach the ones who would never ask for assistance. The groups that we invited to take part in the blast and are having the booths this year are just the groups that have any kind of a mentor or educational program," she says. "Crossroads is so big about mentoring people and giving them the tools that they need to be more successful in life."

There is no charge to attend the events. All proceeds raised from the car show will be given to Crossroad Connections to continue their programs and community events like the "Back 2 School Blast."
