The Huntington City-Township Public Library is showcasing a display featuring books that will be read during the Arts Initiative's hydrant painting public art exhibit on Sept. 7.

Area artists have painted fire hydrants in and near downtown Huntington to reflect a specific book. During the Sept. 7 opening from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., readers will be stationed at each of the painted hydrants, reading excerpts from the corresponding book.

Library employee Amber Hudson used books, book covers and copies of book covers, along with stuffed animals featured in some of the books, to create the display. Most of the books are also available to be checked out.

Library Director Beka Lemons sees this as an opportunity for the library to be involved in a community event.

"Especially because it is a literary-themed event, it's perfect for us," she says. "It's a good partnership."

Visitors to the Sept. 7 event can pick up a map at the New Huntington Theater showing locations of all the hydrants and sign up for a random drawing in which one copy of each book will be given away.

The Party Shop and Brock's Cakery will be open during the event, offering treats for purchase.

Anyone interested in reading a book during the event should contact Debbie Dyer at 358-0055.
