Roanoke to add more reserve officers

Town Marshal Jim Wood has asked the Roanoke Town Council to consider raising the number of reserve officers allowed on staff at the Roanoke Police Department

While the number was originally capped at four, Wood proposed being allowed to have a maximum of 10 reserve officers at the Roanoke Police Department.

"With as many special events and festivals we have been having, I have men that I am running ragged," Wood told council members during their meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

All funds necessary for the changes in staffing at the Roanoke Police Department will come directly from the department's own funds and budget, Wood said. There will be no need for funding from the town.

The change was approved by the Roanoke Town Council.

In other business:

• Roanoke streets will be closed beginning Thursday, Sept. 4, at approximately 4 p.m. for the preparation and duration of the 2014 Roanoke Fall Festival.

• The grass and weeds were cut on 775 Seminary St., Roanoke, last week, council learned. A residence on Sixth Street, Roanoke, was also issued a notice and the unkempt grass has already been taken care of.

• Trash and recycling changes may take place in the coming months as the current town contract is up at the end of the year, council members said.

• A monitoring well at the Roanoke Water Pollution Plant has broken and will need to be replaced. Cost estimates and quotes for a new well will be provided soon.
